We were lucky to catch up with Kirsten Alexis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kirsten thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I’ve always been drawn to anything creative, be it photography, art and writing, which have all been a big part of my life since I was a child. Alongside that, I’ve also been very drawn to outdoor adventures and fascinated by the limitless possibilities of exploration.
Photography and writing have been my ways of expressing and documenting my adventures, and a means to communicate with other likeminded individuals. I hope that my work can also inspire others to share their voice and experiences, and get outside their comfort zones.
Everything just sort of evolved, and with a lot of hard work, creativity, the desire to follow my dreams and take chances, I have been fortunate enough to be able to do photography, writing, and content as a career. It took a lot of learning from successes, failures and setbacks (which I still to to this day), and I continue to learn a lot more about myself and the industry as time goes on. I find that I am constantly adapting and learning, and that is the best part. I am always coming up with. new ideas, and find that there are so many opportunities and paths I can continue to take.
I actually started off as a graphic designer and part-time fitness instructor, straight out of UCLA, where I got my BA in art. From there, I learned a lot about how to incorporate marketing, and ultimately how to use myself as a brand. I wanted to work mostly in the travel, adventure and wellness industries, but also have worked for companies in the real estate, gaming and crypto arenas.
I think I have succeeded mostly because I embrace jumping into the unknown and learning from failure. I love to learn, and I try to make everything as fun and positive as I can.
Kirsten, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Kirsten Alexis (@kirstenalexisadventures) and I am a content creator and adventure enthusiast. I focus mostly on photography with my DSLR and drone, where I document not only my adventures, but also provide creative services for clients in the outdoor adventure, travel and wellness industries.
Alongside my photo and video services, I also provide social media strategy, graphic design, and writing services to help brands with their marketing, advertising and content needs. I strive to help them stand out from the crowd by finding and sharing their authentic stories. I am constantly fascinated by the possibilities of technology and the human potential. Everything truly is limitless!
I believe that with a big imagination, positive mindset and willingness to learn and laugh from failure, you can become your personal best, and I hope to inspire that through my work daily.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to share how amazing life is, and how many possibilities there are to not only enjoy it, but to thrive in it. I want people to be inspired to live their authentic life, and chase personal greatness by getting out of their comfort zone, overcoming fear and living their purpose.
I am inspired by the world around me, and my big imagination. I think that humans need some time every day to be creative, whether it is in the form of art, writing, movement. Having a creative outlet really helps create a sense of balance,
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had more access to marketing and business courses when I was in college, and a network of people I could have used as mentors. However, there is a lot to be said about being self-taught in some regards, and I have since taken some courses, met a lot of mentors, and joined online groups.
As well, just learning from jumping right in and getting experience helps too.
I would say to anyone looking to get into this industry to really learn as much as you can from many different people. Take courses, read books, go to events, connect online. Networking is everything!
