We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kir Tuben. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kir below.
Hi Kir, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think ‘success’ is a tricky term. So many people equate money and finances to success but at the end of the day, success lies in happiness. You could be a very rich but ultimately miserable. I think the best way to attain success is to really define what you think happiness looks like. Work life balance is essential. Once you create a vision, then devise a step by step plan to really attain that vision. Success might be cooking 4 nights a week, having a date night or even finding time for a hobby. Planning is the key to building a life you love.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When you think of luxury DC Weddings, Kir Tuben is your gal. This hybrid wedding photographer has captured close to 200 weddings in her tenure as a full-time, fine art photographer and she has no intention of slowing down. Kir started her career in 2011 after graduating from Duke with a degree in Documentary Photography; she also gives back to the photo community by using her Masters in Education to mentor budding creatives in business and art direction. While she resides in Northern Virginia with her two cats, husband and adorable dog Pepper, Kir shoots weddings all over the globe and is frequently capturing love in her hometown of Delray Beach, Florida for winter wedding season. She has photographed campaigns for the Knot, WeddingWire and multiple national TV shows and has also been featured in People, Martha Stewart, Brides, Style Me Pretty and more. Accolades aside, her proudest accomplishment as an extreme romantic is creating legacy memories for her clients. She loves a mule (both the shoe and the drink), all things vintage and probably wants to take you to karaoke.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Networking. Kindness. Being the hardest working person in the room. Weddings are a team effort and every player is of equal importance. Knowing what other vendors need has come back to me tenfold. Hustling with a gentle hand will always go a long way. Show up early, stay late and say please.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
It’s a split between word of mouth/past clients, Instagram and vendors (mostly planners). Never forget the people that you served early on!
