We recently connected with Kiplyn Primus and have shared our conversation below.
Kiplyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents had me when they were still in college at Southern University less than 100 miles from where they grew up. My grandparents were good friends and they had known each other their whole lives. Even with all of the limitations on them, they raised me and my siblings to be successful. They believed in education and exposure. When we relocated to Atlanta, my sister and I had been to almost every state Southwest of the Mississippi. Additionally, we have been to Mexico and Canada. My parents were educators and every summer my Dad took the opportunity to go to school somewhere. Houston, Texas, Kansas City, Missouri, Flagstaff, Arizona, and Atlanta. After a stint at Atlanta University in the 1960’s my parents moved our family to Atlanta. It is one of the things I’m most thankful for, the move to Atlanta opened many opportunities including entrepreneurship for my Dad, my sister and myself.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I consider myself lucky. I have wanted to work in the advertising industry since watching Bewitch and becoming familiar with the McMann and Tate Advertising Agency. I’ve always consumed media as a child of the television generation. Advertising uses words in persuasive storytelling to engage with potential clients had me at seven years old. Even better than being a witch.
My first job out of college was Advertising Copywriter and I have been lucky to work in communications, media, and marketing throughout my professional career. I’ve always had clients from financial, PNC Bank to NonProfit, Storycorps, and Media WCLK.com.
I share with my clients that I can’t help but overdeliver because I know how media works and my marketing campaigns are designed to impact the bottom line positively.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Reinvention is my superpower. Some people know me as a radio personality, a marketing strategist. and others a journalist. The first time a mentor pointed out my ability to re-invent myself I wasn’t very comfortable with thought. In many instances, I had to re-invent myself, and while I always found a way I didn’t consider it a strength but a necessity. Little did I know this act would lead me to work at two tech start-ups. It also allowed me to refine my focus. My new clients are all in the arena of storytelling and education two passions that never feel like work for me. On occasion, I take on a client outside of my passion for short-term strategies. Reinvention has allowed me to live the adage if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The same mentor who spoke to me about reinvention also shared with me that I bring value. I had been in a tizzy about a client renewing their contract. When the renewal finally came through she said that they renewed because I always bring value. That thought has stayed with me.
What this means to me is that I consistently deliver. I do what I say and most often over-deliver. I have never exploited a client relationship. I don’t recommend things to make money and constantly advocate for my clients to reach their goals.
For me, integrity means being authentic. If you can’t sell me, I can’t sell you.
