We recently connected with Kinnari Sanghavi and have shared our conversation below.
Kinnari , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
Most people may find competition daunting because it can expose vulnerability or fear of failure. The pressure to perform well and the possibility of losing can be intimidating. However, if you are not afraid of competition, it can actually be a source of motivation and growth. Embracing competition means you see it as a chance to challenge yourself, learn, and improve. This mindset allows me to thrive in competitive environments and use it as an opportunity to push my boundaries and achieve my goals.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello!
I have been an artist and a learner throughout my life. I completed my BFA in India, my MA in the UK, and my associates in the USA. My experience spans various disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, photography, and printmaking. My work has been exhibited in galleries and is part of numerous private collections. As an artist, I love exploring different mediums and believe that aesthetics lie in the details.
My journey has involved moving across continents, which has been both exhilarating and challenging. After working as an adjunct faculty member, the shift to remote teaching during COVID-19 led to the elimination of my position. This pivotal moment inspired a new direction in my life. I began by painting small wooden ornaments and selling them door-to-door. A post in my town’s social media group led to requests for pet portraits, which became a huge hit. From October to December of that year, I painted over 150 ornaments, marking it one of my proudest achievements.
Eventually, I transitioned from crafting various wood products to specializing in wearable art, specifically jewelry.
Kinnari Sanghavi Studio is a boutique specializing in one-of-a-kind handcrafted, hand-painted, and curated jewelry pieces. Each item is meticulously crafted with impeccable attention to detail, using materials like wood, resin, metal, freshwater pearls, and natural stones. Our innovative approach and use of mixed mediums make our pieces truly unique.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a new mom I was working as an adjunct faculty at a community college. I appreciated the flexibility my job offered. However, when COVID-19 hit, all positions went remote, and mine was one of the first to be eliminated. After months of searching for a new direction, I decided to pursue my true passion: creating. I began by selling hand-painted ornaments door-to-door to my neighbors, and this marked a significant turning point for me.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
My business is entirely bootstrapped, starting with just a $25 investment. I’ve consistently reinvested every dollar earned to grow my business to where it is today.
