Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to KinkedNitemare. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi KinkedNitemare, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always been involved in the creative arts, whether through theater, speech, music, or content creation. Around 2015, my husband mentioned streaming, which I had only seen him watch and dabble in himself. I started to research the demographic on Twitch and realized there were not many streamers that presented as black Femmes (Which has increased since 2016), so I made a conscious choice to entertain with a full-face cam and be very open about anything I encountered both in games and in stream.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well, I got into streaming in 2016. I started with retro games and using a face cam. That began the full experience of being “other” on the internet. I’ve both written about and shared my experiences being a fat femme presenting black person on the internet. This has gotten me into leadership roles in groups to help protect other femme-presenting people online. I work as Admin for Real Women of Gaming, RWoG for short, now that it has become a fully inclusive group working to just be a safe space and fundraising for various charities.
Being in this type of content creation has given me opportunities to win scholarships/grants, be on panels as well as a game show. More than all of those opportunities, I have met so many like-minded people who want a safer, more accepting gaming industry for all.
We all need community and streaming has given me just that in the most unexpected and wonderful ways.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my view I think society needs to understand art and capitalism are usually at odds with each other. It takes time to make art and everyone benefits from it. Being in a capitalist society makes it hard to make money as an artist because it is often times not seen as valuable or worth the price quoted. Society often doesn’t take into consideration the talent, schooling/training, and time many artists need to become masters of their craft.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the reward comes from entertaining people in a way that they are both inspired, entertained, and informed. I’m very open about my struggles and journeys in life and things I’ve learned as I’ve grown. If I can share my experiences throughout life and with being a content creator, and it helps other’s that is really the reward for me.
