We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kinjal Shah a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kinjal, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
I believe that family businesses, when strategically planned, have the potential to achieve remarkable success, much like ascending to Everest’s peak from an established base camp rather than starting from ground level. Strong cultural values and a long-term growth focus, rather than just short-term profits, are significant strengths of family enterprises. These businesses often benefit from embracing new technologies and ideas, which can enhance company strategies. A deep understanding and passion for the business within the family are key drivers of success.
However, family businesses face challenges, particularly when aligning the passions and interests of various members. It’s crucial to integrate new family members into the company carefully, avoiding perceptions of nepotism, which can demotivate other employees. Openness to new ideas and innovations is essential to prevent generational clashes.
Coming to children joining the family business I joined my father’s business due to a shared interest in the field. But that might not be the case all the time. It’s important for children to have a genuine interest and aptitude for the business to contribute effectively. While I wouldn’t obligate my children to join, I would always support their decision if they choose to.
There are many examples of family businesses that have soared with new generations at the helm, just as there are those that have faltered due to a lack of interest or poor succession planning. Therefore, it’s vital for family businesses to plan carefully for succession and maintain a healthy balance between family dynamics and business needs

I have always harbored a keen interest in the world of technology and business, which led me to pursue computer engineering followed by a master’s in international business and marketing. My career took off by joining my father’s business, where we nurtured a shared vision of global expansion. In a technology driven industry like ours, its very critical to keep in touch with clients. We do it by few ways: 1. Regular communication and updates: Its important to communication the latest technologies and updates with the client to keep them in loop and foster brand loyalty.
2.Customer Feeback: Its very important to have a feedback loop in place to ensure customer satisfaction and gain their trust
3. Quality control: Consistently delivering high-quality, reliable products and services is fundamental. This builds trust and reinforces our brand’s reputation for excellence.
4. Customer service: Providing prompt, helpful customer service is crucial. We ensure that our clients have easy access to support and that their concerns are addressed efficiently and effectively.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I believe any company’s success is only because of its team and thus its very important to ensure high morale amongst the team members.
1. Recognition and Appreciation: Regularly acknowledge and appreciate each team member’s contributions.
2. Fostering a Positive Work Environment: Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive work culture. Encourage collaboration and teamwork, and ensure that the workplace is a safe space for all employees.
3. Regular Check-ins and Feedback: Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with team members to check in on their progress, offer feedback, and understand their challenges. This personal attention can significantly boost morale.
4. Encourage Innovation and Creativity: Give your team the freedom to be creative and innovative. Encourage them to bring new ideas to the table and be open to unconventional approaches.
5.Managing Workload: Ensure that the workload is evenly distributed and manageable. Overburdening team members can lead to burnout and low morale.
Every team member is unique and thus requires empathy, understanding, and genuine care for their well-being and development. Its very important to ensure their needs are met and they are heard.
