We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful KINGDRUMS. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with KINGDRUMS below.
KINGDRUMS, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned to create music from watching my family members do it! I’m a visual learner so it didn’t take long for me to catch on, whether it was watching my dad play every instrument or my older brother making beats and playing drums, I picked up skills and the desire to make music from numerous people in my life but those two kick started it all for me.
Knowing what I know now I still don’t think I would speed up the process because I definitely would risk missing bits of info or moments I would have to recall on later on down the road. I’m a firm believer in trusting the process, trusting GOD and taking my time when opportunities occur to learn new things. You gotta slow down sometimes man.
I think the skill that were most essential was retainability, being able to remember stored musical information and then using that knowledge to spark new ideas is golden in my opinion.
I believe the obstacles that stood in my way were life and myself honestly. Sometimes life happens and it requires your attention to be elsewhere for a season. The other obstacle was simply myself. Often times I just needed a mental break, learning new things can become overwhelming at times and its vital to have a time of mental recalibration to return fresh and with a new zeal for the thing you love to do.
KINGDRUMS, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is KINGDRUMS or KD for short I’m from a small city in Ga called Macon. I’ve been producing professionally for 8 years but I’ve been creating music all my life. I grew up playing drums in church and I’ve been around music since I was born. I got into the music industry by winning a contest between about 250 producers to create a record for a well-known production company called Beatstars, a global subscription-based music licensing platform where recording artists and producers collaborate, license and distribute their work to multiple parties through a variety of non-exclusive and exclusive license types. After winning the competition the song I produced is called ” In My Zone” featuring Dizzy Wright, Audio Push, Demrick, Emilio Rojas and Reezy. That started my professional music career. I then teamed up with the legendary RnB artist Sammie to create multiple vibes on multiple projects. I’ve had, and still having amazing moments of meeting my favorite artist I grew up listening to and I’m still living the dream. One thing I’ve learned is that discipline is one of the key things that’s needed in this industry. It allows you to control your thoughts and actions. I can’t stress how important it is, you’ll never know who you’ll run in to at studio sessions, events or who you’ll meet in this lifestyle so it’s vital to have a foundation built with discipline and patience. I would even encourage you to adopt this character trait and manifest it into a lifestyle. You’ll be able to follow through on commitments to others and most importantly yourself. When it comes to the services I provide its simply to create the music/song and if I’m in the session with the artist, to help navigate and take pressure off of that artist and cultivate an atmosphere that makes everyone able to be the best version of themselves! If an artist needs any genre or any style, demos I provide it all upon request. I think the thing that sets me apart from other producer | songwriters is my work ethic, and my ability to connect artists ,I’m a diligent hard worker and creating the vibes needed is always my priority. My focus isn’t on anything else but what I’m working on at the time. I’ll always pride myself on that. The main thing I feel that needs to be known about me is that no matter what I’m always genuine and my motives and agendas are clear. Making the music and creating moments is what I’m about!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Man, a lesson I feel I had to unlearn is that you absolutely cannot do it alone. I think my first attempt at producing professionally didn’t go as well as I thought because I didn’t have a team. I was taken advantage of and pretty much had my music stolen. It taught a valuable lesson I need help. I encourage every producer that’s starting out to have a legal team, and don’t be afraid of collaborations! I think that’s where this industry is heading anyway.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes actually, I’ve been reading this book called “Are you praying for the wrong thing” By Travis Greene. It’s a book challenging believers to learn to ask God what he wants for us and not just what we want. It shifted my prayers from saying ” God please just let me make it big’ to “God whatever your will is for me in this industry help me prepare and be ready”. It’s not a prayer book, but an invitation to embrace a life of joy and expectation. I changed from praying for stuff and I started praying for wisdom and strategy. A great read!!!
