We recently connected with King Zell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, King thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path was about 9 years ago. I knew I wanted to do something dealing with entertainment, years before that. It was just a matter of what to stick with and be passionate about. Before I ever thought of making music or doing the many other things that I do, I used to dance. I had a crew and we recorded videos and posted them on YouTube. I did that for about 4 years, then it kind of fizzled out. I still know how to do it but other things caught my attention.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first got into making music by being part of a rap group and being the only one that didn’t make music. I was around rappers all the time and in studio sessions all the time, so one day I just figured I’d try it out. I knew I could always do it but didn’t care to at first. I used to downplay being a “rapper” when I first started for about 2 years. I started experimenting with different sounds and I found my lane and stuck with it.
How I got into producing music wasn’t that long ago. Maybe a year ago, one of my friends who’s also a music artist/music producer (Scotty Banx) taught me how to really put a beat together. Even though I already had an ear for music and what beats are supposed to sound like and what I would want a beat to sound like, he taught me how to structure a beat correctly.
I got into modeling 6 years ago. I always took nice pictures on social media and people always commended me on how “different” my aesthetics are and the kind of aura that I have. A few brands hit me up to model in their clothes and be in magazines. All, of that ties into how I got into styling and creative directing.
I think what sets me apart from others is, I always think outside of the box with everything I do and I never wanted to just do one thing. Also, I think my artist vision stands out a lot as well. I can listen to any song and come up with a video concept for it on the spot.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think society shouldn’t be scared to support what they like. Whether it doesn’t seem “normal” or the “traditional” thing to do, support if you like it. Also, stop waiting on the next person to like something in order for you to come out and say you like and support it as well.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media by just being myself. People love authenticity.
