Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to King Tetrus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
King, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Wow – honestly this is one of subjects I’ve been dying to touch upon. So Rap has always been my thing – since about 8th grade I was that annoying friend who rapped everywhere. The bus stop, on the way to class, on the way home, it didn’t matter I simply just was obessed.
After high school rapping was more a fun thing- almost a party trick in college. I grew up in a really traditional household and I’m not sure I always had the freedom to use my voice and really showcase my creativity. College hits and its more of the same, I allowed others opinions weigh higher than my own.
Fast foward to covid – that little voice in my head became louder and louder and I decided “hey you’re home 24hrs a day lets just make an album” couple hundred thousand streams later. Here we are.
I believe it was quarentine that made me realize my passion.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
( Clears throat) Allow me to introduce myself! My names King Tetrus I am that soft spoken black token rapper extrodinaire based in Miami, FL. I bring a new sound and energy/perspective to what we call hip hop coming out of miami.
Heavily influenced by the leaders of our past ( gospel, soul, funk) think Kanye West before he meets Kim K mixed with Lupe Fiasco thats from the home of bass booty music. ( Yes I’m aware its hard to see it lol- just come to a show)
I dropped my debut album in 2020 called out of tokens and its set the tone for my movement. I believe the one thing that seperates me from others is that I geniuenly love love music. I could care less about accolades ( but still give them to me) or the clubs or looking cool I find peace in the grind. I write with intent I work to simply get better.
Music is reflection of self and the most consistent theme in my music is second chance. I feel like I have a new date with destiny after fumbling the first one. This is my quest for perfect. I know what its like to live for others and I never want to let myself down again. So every stream & follower I appreciate it because I cant take it for granted.
If you’re into music or just a redemption story I beleive I might the person for you!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Honestly In most vulnerable way – I have three very distinct goals. 1. xxl Freshman cover – validation comes in very different ways however I believe this puts you in a different level. I believe with the progress we are making thats a real target.
2. Consistent radio play- my single just debuted on 103.5 the beat miami and now that I’ve had a taste all I want is more.
3. I simply want my pen to be considered alongside the greatest of all time. I think the goal is perfection and to be great if thats not the goal why even play.
The easy part is defining the target the hardest part is the process to get there. Finding peace within the small wins and understanding the progression isnt always linear. I love the grind of it!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Wow ! the most rewarding ? Man yall are coming with the hard questions out here.
Ummm… I think the most rewarding aspect is when you do a show and people know the words to your songs or if you get a dm from a supporter like “hey bro you’re killing it” those little things mean so much. I often get lost just writing stuck in my room just grinding and forget to smell the flowers.
Often I think we look at others on the same journey and compare – but the one thing I have to consistently remind myself is that hey, you’re doing great even if it doesnt look like it lol
