We were lucky to catch up with King Street Sax recently and have shared our conversation below.
King Street, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
My Journey from the Streets to the Stage**
**Introduction:**
In the vibrant pulse of the DMV area, amidst the cacophony of urban life, I discovered my voice through the sweet melodies of the saxophone. From humble beginnings as a street performer to commanding the stage with my soulful tunes, my journey is a testament to the transformative power of music and the unwavering pursuit of passion.
**Early Life:**
As a child growing up in the heart of the DMV area, I was captivated by the enchanting sounds of jazz and gogo that echoed through the city streets. It wasn’t long before I found myself drawn to the saxophone, its smooth timbre and emotive resonance speaking to something deep within me. From the moment I picked up that instrument, I knew that music would be my guiding light.
**Street Performer to Stage Artist:**
Post college and looking for work with nothing but my saxophone and a burning desire to share my music with the world, I took to the streets of King Street in Virginia. Each note I played was a reflection of my soul, weaving stories of love, loss, and triumph for all who would listen. Through the raw energy of street corners and impromptu performances, I found my voice and forged a path forward.
**Embracing the Scene:**
Immersing myself in the local jazz scene was a revelation. Open mics, jam sessions, and late-night gigs became my stomping grounds, offering endless opportunities for growth and collaboration. With each performance, I pushed the boundaries of my artistry, experimenting with new sounds and styles while honing my craft alongside fellow musicians.
**Turning Passion into Business:**
What began as a love affair with music soon evolved into a thriving business venture. From booking gigs and managing promotions to collaborating with other artists and building a brand, I embraced the entrepreneurial spirit with gusto. Through dedication and perseverance, I navigated the complexities of the music industry, transforming my passion into a sustainable career.
**Triumphs and Challenges:**
My journey has been punctuated by both triumphs and challenges. From the exhilaration of sold-out shows to the uncertainty of financial instability, I’ve experienced the full spectrum of emotions along the way. Yet, through it all, the music has remained my constant companion, guiding me through the darkest of times and celebrating with me in moments of triumph.
**Legacy and Impact:**
Today, I stand as a testament to the enduring power of music and the indomitable spirit of the human soul. My journey from the streets to the stage is a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance. Through my music, I strive to inspire others to follow their dreams, knowing that with dedication and determination, anything is possible.

King Street, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey with the saxophone began in elementary school, where I first picked up the instrument and discovered a love for its soulful melodies. From there, my passion for music only grew stronger.
Throughout college, I delved deeper into my study of the saxophone, honing my skills and expanding my repertoire. It was during this time that I realized the importance of infusing every note with my own unique expression.
After college, I decided to take my music to the streets, performing for passersby and sharing my passion with anyone who would listen. This experience taught me the value of authenticity and connection in my performances.
With determination and hard work, I established my own LLC, turning my passion for music into a full-time career. Networking and seeking out opportunities allowed me to expand my reach and share my musical experiences with a wider audience.
Today, as a full-time musician, I take pride in the fact that I bring my whole self to every performance. As the quote says, What sets me aside from everyone else is that I have learned to put all of me into every breath and every note that I play. Because of this I am one of one.
My journey as a saxophonist has been one of growth, discovery, and a commitment to authenticity I am proud of the journey and the fact that I never gave up even though there were days that were rough. Each note I play is not just a sound, but an opportunity to create a meaningful experience for both myself and my audience.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
“Music touches the world where words can’t reach”. I am not sure who said this quote, but it has stuck with me and been my number one goal while on this musical journey. To touch people and impact lives is such a beautiful gift that i do not take for granted. Every time I perform I give it my all in the hopes of uplifting someone who may be listening
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
“WILL” (the autobiography of Will Smith) has helped me immensely on my journey as a creative. He goes very deep an in depth of his personal journey, accomplishments, emotions, downfalls, and triumphs of a creative. I believe every creative can benefit from this book.
