Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to King/mr Champion. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
King/Mr, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project will be the latest project that I will be dropping soon. This project will be meaningful because of the lessons that I learnt as a result of the changes that were made in the process of the project. Some of the initial plans changed, but overall, it turned out to be for the best.
After recording a Single, I ended up making some changes to My team, which affected the release date of that Single. I also wasn’t completely happy with the mix and mastering of the Track and so replacing the embers that I previously worked with ended up becoming a bigger challenge than expected, which delayed the release of this Single even further. At this period of time, it seemed like I was going through quite a few changes, and the additional setbacks began to affect not only the next release but the following releases also. The main viewpoint was that this may have affected the timetable that I was working on, which may have affected the impact that the Single may have had, meaning that this release may have had to be shelved completely. At the time of recording, I was loving the Single because of the energy and the vibe, and I was at a point where My other releases were getting recognition due to the lyrical delivery that I was bringing on each Track- and I believe that this Track was set to take that to another level. But, things then seemed to slow down and what seemed to be a minor issue turned to a long delay with My next release.
Finding a new engineer then seemed harder than expected, which caused even further delays. It seemed like the engineers that were available didn’t understand, or couldn’t match the sound that I was going for. Focusing on these areas began to take My attention off of the Music which in some way seemed to affect My creativity when planning.
forward and my plans with the Single.
I began to question if it’ll even be released next, or if I’ll have to shelf it for the long term. Along with other moves as well, which affected the income and ultimmately the investment that I could put towards this project, this became a transitional period for Myself in a few areas of My Life.
With everything happening, I had to take time off of focusing on the timetable and start remembering why I did what I do. I had to remember the Love that I had for making the Music. I put the administrative element of this role on hold and began to focus on the music again. I began to drop Freestyles and eventually went back and worked on the Single that had been delayed for so long. Any doubts I had concerning this Single disappeared when I sat back and listened to the Single from that place of loving the Music. I believed in the Single again and I was motivated to drop this Single there and then, which is what I did. The Single started getting love- it was added to a radio playlists and it featured on a radio show . The DJ really rocked with that Track also.
This Single went on to also get nominated for an award. This moment just confirmed a major lesson that I learnt, which was that as an Artist, you cannot allow situations to cause you to lose sight of where you are going, or to cause you to lose confidence in what you are currently working on. You have to believe and have that ‘tunnel vision’ for what you want to do.
I also learnt some other lessons such as the importance of growth. As an Artist, you shouldn’t shouldn’t afraid to go back to the drawing board. Music is Art, and a key element of art is seeing growth in the Artist. So, don’t be afraid to go back and check your releases. Review your Work from the element of growth and not fear, or time schedules, and your Work will probably benefit from that.
And when situations seem to arise, causing things seem difficult or impossible, you have to remember your why- your reason for doing what you do. If you have a God Given Dream, don’t let these situations cause you to lose Hope, but have Faith that God will cause all things to work together for your good.
Since then, I have worked on a few Singles and I’m working on dropping more Music soon. I still haven’t established a completely new team, but I have a solid set of People around Me and I’m getting ready to go back to work. I have confidence in My releases, in My Work and in what Im doing as an Artist (and of course, in those around Me.) And so, with that being said, Watch This Space.
King/Mr, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Lyricist/Rapper and I make versatile and diverse Music that discusses various topics, such as social, political and current affairs, but I also have dropped releases that listeners can vibe to. I believe that the balance is key to My position as an Artist which will ensure that the listeners have an informed, uplifted and elevated experience. I also want the listener to be able to vibe and just enjoy other Singles. Overall, I aim to tell the listeners My story, both of where I am have come from, what I have overcome and where I am going. My Music also highlights what I am pushing to achieve and overcome in the future,
I got into this industry/craft through the love that developed and grew with Myself. I grew up in a Household and listened to music frequently. This was mainly Gospel Music, but I heard Hip Hop and loved it also. As I grew, this became more than just something that I would listen to. It became expression for Myself, and I soon discovered that it became expression for others also. I had become a voice and a representative of those around Me, from My community and I was able to reach people with the Music, to address current events or just tell the stories that people could relate to or be informed by. This just enabled Me to fall in love with what I do even more.
Apart from recently being nominated for an award, I have received coverage from major platforms. As an independent Artist, this is a major accomplishment, because I have featured on platforms with other established Artists, which shows progress. I do not do what I do for the accolades and the attention, but it is always encouraging to have what you do receive recognition, especially when you are putting the work in.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One thing I can say is driving My creative mission is appreciation. I was told that your talents are God’s Gift to you and what you do with the your talents is your Gift/ show of appreciation back to God. I want to use these Gifts that I have to make the great impact that I believe My Gifts and talents can make.
Another motivating factor that drives Me is the knowledge that My talent allows Me to be a voice for those that are voiceless, whether it is telling their story, addressing policies that may disproportionately affect people from My community or just by informing the uninformed of what may currently be happening in a way which may challenge narratives and create dialogue. I believe what I do has the power to do these things and therefore I use My platform with both the understanding and responsibility. I am proud to be in a position to do this but also humble, understanding the responsibility that has been given to Myself.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think one thing that non-creatives will struggle to understand at times is the effort and the time that you put into your craft. Being a creative will push you to constantly want to perfect your craft, which will require time and discipline. This may mean that you decide to work on your goals and instead of going out with friends, or it may see you taking more time to perfecting your craft because you are pushing to reach that next level or you’re preparing to be a part of an event, meaning that you may have to miss hangouts or reschedule plans to focus on getting your skills to that next level (or to prepare for the event. ) You may also be working towards a goal within a set time period, which means that you have to lock in (and have that tunnel vision) resulting in this becoming the priority, taking your time and attention because you want to seize this moment. Unfortunately, not all non-creatives will understand this and those who do not create may not be appreciative of this locked in mentality that you may have. There will be times when you have to do this even if it means doing it alone. One thing I have learnt is that you have to be locked in – don’t let anything distract you or cause you to take your foot of the gas and slow down your progress.
Not everyone will understand this journey, but this is your journey and you cannot allow people to cause your to lose focus on your goals or of the destination. At the end of the day, even if people do not understand the hustle, the grind will yield results and when the fruit of your work is revealed for all to see, then those who did not initially understand why you put so much effort into what you did will then quickly begin to understand.
Another thing non-creatives may not understand is the actual work that creatives have to do to put out quality Music or content. As well as time and effort, there is a lot of work that goes into the final release/ product that is put out. This generally is planned very thoroughly and gone over with much scrutiny or it is worked on meticulously and repeatedly to meet a certain standard, which may lead to a change in direction or a complete overhaul of the original idea. This is what makes the final release/ product even more worth it, because it has been through a rigorous trial and error period. Don’t be discouraged and don’t give up. You have to work through it and at times break that barrier to get to the final outcome. This is a God Given Dream and Gift, so you put the work in, and God Willing, you’ll see amazing results.
Creatives will probably being nodding enthusiastically as they read this and from One creative to another- We see you!!
