We recently connected with King Lop and have shared our conversation below.
Hi King, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
– The come up (1,2 &3) – Thru Hell To XXL
– backwoods & love songs (1,2 & 3)
King, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is King Lop, artist and entertainer, based out of sykesville, Maryland. I started doing music in about 2015. I always had an interest in music. Me and my cousin Devon would freestyle in the car for hours, not knowing where it would lead us but around that time I met a friend name, Polo. We started doing music together and the rest was history. We made a few songs together and he told me bro you really have to keep going. Your fire. I didn’t really take it quite serious at the time but I decided to pursue music even though at the time it was more of a hobby. I think the one thing that sets me apart from other artist is my versatility. I feel as though there’s not a single song that I could not rap on verses, where other artist tend to make music that sound similar. I tried to shy away from those habits. A few things I’m most proud of on my musical Journey is opening up for my favorite artist G Herbo, making double XXL’s artist to watch 2021, and receiving a call from Universal Music Group in 2019. The one thing I want my supporters to take away from my brand and music is to always be true to yourself and just because you start at the bottom does not mean you can’t make it to the top. That’s why I created Bottom Boyz Music Group. I want people who come from the bottom like me to know that there is always a way to become more than the circumstances you were given. Anything is possible.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story in particular that stands out to me along my musical Journey is becoming XXL 2021 ARTIST TO WATCH. This stands out to me most because a few years prior to me making the magazine. I made a note in my phone of things I wanted to accomplish in the following years. Although there was a list of things that I did not accomplish I had wrote that in 2020 I will make XXL magazine freshman, cover. Although I did not make the freshman cover, I feel as though I spoke it into existence. Because the following year I made artist to watch. So really just believing in yourself and manifesting can take you a long way. At the time I thought that dream was far out of reach, not knowing where destiny would lead me. But everything ended up working out in my favor. I still hope to make XXL freshman cover though. Moral of the story is never doubt yourself because at the time I thought that was impossible but I prove to myself that it was in fact, very possible
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my opinion, the one thing that people need to learn about creatives is how much we put into our goals. How many sleepless nights, empty bank accounts, and tribulations, we face along the journey. In today’s society, I feel as though people tend to show more negativity than positivity. So if someone sees someone doing better than they are, they tend to hate instead of giving the proper credit when it’s due. I think we should all just come together and believe in each other because it’s easier to be defeated when we are divided. But when we are united, there’s no telling what limits we can reach. I feel as though there’s a lot of crab in the bucket mentality. And a lot of that stems from pride. But if you take that out of the equation, I think the world would be a better place for creative artist.
