We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful King Hollis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with King below.
Alright, King thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was in my early twenties sitting on my mother’s living room floor watching Once Upon in America. There was a scene where an older man played by Robert De Niro pulls a brick from the wall of an old restaurant and peers through the hole to see a young girl practicing ballet, When the camera pulls back on De Niro’s character, he is now 14 years old, his eyes filled with a the boyiish wonderment of youth as he watches his crush dance. It was a flawless transition, I paused the film, slammed my hand on the floor and said out loud: “I want to make people feel what I just felt for the rest of my life”. That moment felt like magic. It was beautiful, magical and bold. I was hooked. I wanted to be a story teller. That moment created a love that I have yet to let go of.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I won an award for a short story in high school. I was encouraged to keep writing. My love for story telling blossomed into film making. While creating independent films I started to venture into the advertising world. There I took my story telling abilities and created a genre of advertising called Branded Entertainment Solutions. This is where original entertainment content and advertising came together to form a new genre. In the age of content advertisers needed more tools to compete with the ever changing landscape of content creation. Our team made this happen for them and it kept producing incredible results. I think what sets me apart is my diverse skill sets and ability to problem solve. Any filmmaker will tell you we are not only creatives but professional problem solvers. I think what I’m most proud of is the out of the box approach my team and I have taken to create things over the years. We have not been afraid to go down any lane, from independent film, broadcast television, to hybrid advertising strategies to social justice content, We don’t shy away form any challenges. I think I want people to know that we believe that story telling is the jewel in the crown of human connection, and we believe in it’s power wholeheartedly.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The peaks a valleys of film production can be a tale of the extreme. But one’s belief in self and trusting one’s own process can push them through any obstacle. I was homeless three times and each time I found away out with help from my tribe to make a better life for myself. I took a hundred dollars and turn it into a million dollar company. I was able to do this with belief in myself and being open to finding my tribe. Finding like minded people was the key to my success. Your team is everything.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Sun Tzu is my favorite book for all things in life.
