We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kinedy Bouse. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kinedy below.
Kinedy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One deeply underappreciated facet of being an entrepreneur or creative is the kind of crazy stuff that happens from time to time. It could be anything from a disgruntled client attacking an employee or waking up to find out a celebrity gave you a shoutout on TikTok – the sudden, unexpected hits (both positive and negative) make the profession both exhilarating and exhausting. Can you share one of your craziest stories?
My stories don’t typically blend in with the average business owner, but I feel they’re something that will keep me separated from the crowd. My work as a paranormal investigator has brought me hundreds of rewarding experiences & several lows that I thought I would never bounce back from. One of my most rewarding moments in the field was when I was finally able to give a name to a spirit that was haunting a particular location in Ohio. His backstory is very vague & I didn’t have a whole lot to go off of when I walked into the investigation but I knew I was going to give it my best shot. This property was on the deeper edge of Civil War history & that’s what caught my attention first. I LOVE anything to do with Civil War history. There was said to be the angry, violent spirit of a former bounty hunter who inhabited the barn out back, & I’ve always believed “angry & violent” was a lie. I always believed he was just simply misunderstood.
When we first arrived on the property, I stepped out of the car & immediately my attention was drawn to the barn that sat behind the house. The urge to go out there was unlike anything I’d felt before. I ended up saying out loud, “I’ll be out there in a little bit, I have some stuff to do inside first. I promise.” The urge kind of went away but while on the tour, it kept coming back, stronger than the time before. I went back to the gear room after our tour & I started getting a feeling that I NEEDED to go to the barn. I sat in the chair for a few minutes, holding a pair of dowsing rods, a piece of equipment we use to answer yes/no questions. (If the rods cross, that means yes. If they separate, it means no). I started asking questions about who wanted me in the barn, I started with asking if he wanted a cigar, he answered yes. I looked across the table at my teammate for the night, & asked “do we know the bounty hunters name?” He shook his head & said “no, I don’t think anyone does.” Suddenly, a name popped into my head & I had no clue where it came from, I hadn’t seen any books, photos or newspaper articles since I’d arrived on the property, but this name just stuck in my head like it was glued to the wall in front of me. I got up from my chair & rushed to the gift shop to find our tour guide, hopeful she would have some sort of information for me. I asked her, “do we by chance know anything about the bounty hunter? Like his name?” She looked at me & shook her head, saying “not anything solid, one other group has gotten a name but we don’t know.” I looked at her questioningly, urging her without words to say the name I already somehow knew. At the same time, we both said “James”. From that point forward, he finally had a proper name. Before she left us alone on the property for the night, the tour guide pulled me aside & said “by all means, if he is the one calling to you, reach out to him & see what his story is. He doesn’t ever react to people like this. You have my permission to focus on him.” I thanked her & bade her farewell for the evening, turning back to my team & sorting out our equipment & where to go first. I told the guys, “I want to take the cigar & go to the barn, but I don’t think all of us should go.” My best friend volunteered to go with me to make sure I was safe, & we went to the barn. I stepped just inside the threshold & felt his energy start coming towards me. I spoke out loud, saying “I brought this cigar for you, you told me it’s what you wanted. None of us are here to hurt you & I’m going to do what I can to help you make sure your story is corrected. I don’t believe you’re mean, & I don’t believe you’re evil.” The energy in the barn began to shift from heavy to light, & I started to feel happy, almost as if James was saying “finally! You’re here to help me!” I made both of the guys promise that they wouldn’t overstep with James, (he had trust issues with men, because of the way he lost his life) & I could feel a completely different vibe coming from the barn after I went back inside. I told him he could come into the house, & we would talk, so I could share his true story after. After a dinner break, we got to it, we went upstairs & set up our equipment in the room called “the chapel” which was a former bedroom of one of the residents. The other member on our team started acting strange, claiming he suddenly didn’t feel good. He ended up leaving for the night, saying he felt horribly ill. After thinking back, I remembered he had gone out to the barn while I was off the property grabbing dinner for everyone. To this day, he will not tell a soul what he did in that barn that resulted in him feeling sick. We were down to two people with more spirits than we could count, in a house supposedly with more spirits we could count. We turned on an SB7 spirit box (essentially a broken radio that sweeps through white noise, making it easier for spirits to communicate) & Sage (the only other teammate left) held it. No voices of any kind came through the first few minutes he held it, then I asked him to “put it on the floor, closer to me.” He did, placing the box & it’s speaker just a few inches from my feet, & voices began rolling through like waves. We started asking questions, each one getting a relevant, intelligent answer, & we started recording on our phones. I asked “Is there a James here? The man from the barn?” The box swept for a few stations before a clear “yeah, I’m here.” Broke through the static. My jaw dropped in awe because it was as if he had walked into the room & joined our conversation. I introduced myself & told him “I would like if you could sit down with me & tell me your story. I know people are always in your space antagonizing & provoking you, but I’m not going to do that. I want you to know that you can trust me with whatever it is you tell me.” I promised him that night that I would do everything in my power to be sure his story was told the right way. This is the first time I’ve ever publicly spoken on his case, & this is the first chance I’ve had to uphold my promise to him.
After I gave him my promise, Sage began trying to ask him questions but he wouldn’t respond. I finally caught on to a pattern, so I decided I would ask the exact same question, & sure enough, I would get responses from the same voice. I started off by asking the simple things, what’s your last name, where are you from? That kind of stuff, which is how we build a rapport with certain spirits in any given location. He answered me, giving me a last name & I took to the internet, hoping I could find something. I used the ‘Soldiers & Sailors’ database provided by the National Park Service to identify Civil War Soldiers & Sailors. I typed in the first & last name I was given, followed by the regiment number I was given & only one name popped up. “Jesse K. Thompson”. I pulled my eyes from my phone & I asked “is James a nickname?” To which I immediately got a response, “yes.” The regimental number matched what he had told me & I almost began crying tears of joy because he finally had a full name, he wasn’t just the “mean bounty hunter” anymore.
Our interaction with Jesse lasted an impressive 2 1/2 hours, which is VERY uncommon in the paranormal world, but I finally had what I needed to start researching him & verifying what he told me. All of my research turned positive results & I spoke to the location, giving them everything I had since found out. I’m still working on some bits & pieces that place him on the property only a handful of hours before he was brutally killed by the homeowners “ranch hands”. Jesse is still one of my favorite stories that I have been able to put the pieces together for & all of my findings after this feature will be in my first book. I’m still working hard to give other soldiers of the Civil War a voice, tell people their stories & hopefully bring them some sort of peace after all the hell they went through in life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! My name is Kinedy, I’m a paranormal investigator, tour guide, blogger, future author, freelance photographer & dare I say, intuitive medium. My journey in the paranormal field started a little over two years ago with Mike & Chris of the Wraith Chasers from the TV shows “Ghost Asylum”, “Haunted LIVE!” & “Haunted Towns”. I went to an event of theirs in Gallatin, TN & safe to say, that even now, I’m still hooked on finding answers when it comes to the unknown.
I usually recap all of my investigations on my social media @thehauntedtimes or on my brand new blog titled “Historically Spooking”. I’ve been using social media to share stories for the same amount of time that I’ve been investigating so feel free to take a stroll on my socials!
“Historically Spooking” is my brand new wesbite where I discuss history & ghost stories all in one place. I have two separate photo galleries that I’m constantly updating with pictures I’ve taken while on my adventures! Blog posts are usually all new on Friday’s but I’m cooking up a little something special for the end of the month, so my regular schedule is on hold at the moment.
Outside of myself & my social media, I am a co-host on an upcoming paranormal podcast titled “Paranormal Roots” which will hopefully be released soon! Along with the podcast, I will be co-starring in several projects with my team, including a documentary & mini-series which we plan to release next year!
I’m most proud of the community I’ve built across all of my platforms, the stories I’ve been able to tell & those I have yet to tell. Being able to tell the stories of people who’ve passed hundreds of years ago is simply the most rewarding thing I’ve done in my life. The paranormal is a way for me to relive history firsthand, getting to know those important “characters” on a personal basis & ensure that their stories remain true & aren’t tainted by what society thinks should be.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to unlearn is knowing that not everyone is going to agree with the stories I tell or the people I focus on in my work. When I go into a location, I don’t shun or disrespect a certain side. So, when I go into places like old forts or battlefields, I often get the opposing side wanting to talk more. When I share the experiences I’ve had with them, people are quick to read the word “Confederate” & instantly turn their noses because of what they believe & that’s okay. Caring about people’s opinions is what I’ve had to teach myself to ignore & just focus on my original passion; telling truth in the stories of the past.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As of right now, I am a full-time college student pursuing my bachelor’s degree in American & Military history. I still have a few years ahead of me for my bachelor’s, but a total of roughly seven years once I begin chasing my PhD!
My ultimate goal is to hopefully run my own museum one day that focuses on the lesser known side of history. I’ve always had a passion for things like the American Revolution & American Civil War & those are both historical moments that I excel in when it comes to knowledge, so I want to use what I know & build something that everyone can enjoy, all while keeping it alive so it doesn’t end up repeating itself.
