We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kindall Tucker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kindall , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always had an infatuation with tattooing. I got my first tattoo when I was 15, another at 16, and the number keeps on growing (Sorry, mom). However, I first pursued the beauty industry because it was an area I was both comfortable with, and passionate about. I was 21 when I started my solo Esthetics career, working in my own space for the first time. It was a very unique experience to have started my esthetician journey in a tattoo studio- But the environment was fun, clean, entertaining, and everyone was always having a good time. It worked well, and it peaked my interest with tattooing even more so. When I initially chose my career path in beauty, I didn’t have the confidence in my artistic ability but I did know I loved the feeling of creating something beautiful, and giving a client that same feeling when they leave. As I worked alongside some of the most talented artists in Dallas, I gained knowledge and confidence in myself slowly but surely.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Growing up, I had a bit of a rocky childhood and suffered from a lot of anxiety due to moving around so much in high school. One thing that always made my anxiety worse was my skin, so I invested in learning more. I went to the Aveda Institute for esthetics in Dallas, and graduated in 2018. By the age of 20, I had worked as an Esthetican with Aveda, and also at Bliss Spa in the W Hotel. I came to a turning point in 2019 where I decided to take my career solo after the opportunity had presented itself. Aadam and Saga had just opened Valkyrie Tattoo Gallery and they were so welcoming, and supportive of my goals in every possible way. I worked alongside tattoo artists and after a year of doing primarily skincare, I was inspired to take my career to the next level. I flew to Beverly Hills, California and learned how to do Microblading, Powder and Ombré brows with Sandi Jones at Couture Brows Academy.
Adding cosmetic tattooing to my list of services really gave me a lot more creative freedom in my day to day work life. I fell head over heels with the instant results and gratification my clients were looking for. As time went on, my microblading clientele had fully surpassed my esthetic clientele. I was hungry for more, and in 2021, I began a tattoo apprenticeship with Aadam, at Midgard Tattoo Company.
I was then faced with some unexpected changes in my personal life, which ultimately led me to drop everything and moved to Oahu, Hawai’i at the very beginning of 2022. After months of searching for the right opportunity with the right team, I began an apprenticeship here at Sacred Art Tattoo in Kapolei, with Daniel Kunimura. I’m now offering piercings, small tattoos, and microblading services on the island. It’s been an unreal experience and i’m immensely grateful for the support of the people around me. Though I am currently on island, I am still taking new clients in Dallas, as I travel back and forth a few times a year.
I’m learning something new every day, and I aspire to be as great as the fellow artists that I have had the privilege of working around.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think the key to true resilience is keeping a good sense of humor, and accepting change as it comes. I was faced with quite a few challenges when I decided uproot myself and my business. I had to quickly make new relationships, and figure it out as I go. In the end, overcoming those curveballs created an even better end result then I could’ve imagined for myself.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There’s nothing more rewarding than the feeling I get when my clients are happy with my work. Whether they need just help with their skin, or they want fuller, natural looking eyebrows. It’s such a fulfilling moment to be a part of. However, I think the most rewarding part of this journey for me is the continuous growth. Looking back at my art from one year, 6 months, or even 1 week ago. Seeing small improvements make me excited about where the future will lead. Learning never stops!
