We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kinda Turner. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kinda below.
Hi Kinda, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents are very hard-working, southern parents. They believe that you earn what you work for. My parents put me to work in their family business at the age of 13. I worked in every department in the business and was oftentimes the youngest person there.
After school and during the summers, it was understood that I was going to work. No question about it. At the time, I did not understand why I needed to work as I was a kid trying to enjoy my years as a teenager. Work was the last thing on my mind. As an adult, I appreciate my parents instilling in me a great work ethic as it has opened more doors than I could have imagined. They taught me how to treat people right, refine my craft, be honest and to always be one step ahead. I believe you’re only as good as your last project so providing quality work, great customer service and earning client loyalty are really important to me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi there! My name is Kinda Turner and I am the founder of K. Makini Image Consulting. I provide one of a kind style solutions for high achieving professionals.
In college, I majored in Finance with a minor in Bankruptcy Law. With my educational background and professional experience, I was able to work for captive finance companies and quickly learned how they were able to obtain consumer loyalty by creating top notch products that were highly sought after. The type of loyalty that transferred from generation to generation.
Looking good was instilled in me at an early age. I always had an interest in the fashion industry and I loved styling friends/family members in college and while I worked my way up the corporate ladder. I would always receive compliments on my outfits at work, church and other events. Some people even thought I hired a stylist to put together my looks! I knew I had something but just needed an extra push.
After years of corporate experience, I had a light bulb moment. If obtaining consumer loyalty through providing excellent customer service along with a highly desirable product worked for them, it for sure could work for me! So I took the same tools that I learned and used them to start my own small business.
I am a people person. I love to learn about why they reach for certain types of clothing in their closets and how it makes them feel when they put it on. I pride myself on working together with my clients to provide looks that they wouldn’t normally shop for but looks good on. The new looks tend to be the ones that they reach for first in their closets!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As a small business, marketing is huge. You have to roll up your sleeves, research your target market and get to work! Networking events and being a walking billboard has worked for me. Don’t get me wrong, it is hard work and no one is going to do it for you unless you hire them! Set a goal to go to X amount of events per month and to connect with X amount of people that fit your target market. The first couple times may be hard and you will have some that may follow/unfollow you but you have to keep going. Create posts that will attract your target market and work with fellow creatives for content. Share each other’s content on stories and posts. It’ll work if you work it!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is that there’s no one holding me back. I can be as creative as I want to be and the sky is the limit. I found that most people don’t want the same things being replicated in different colors. People want something new, different and creative. Like a fresh new start. I like creating one of a kind looks that just work for my clients.
