We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kin Yoba. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kin below.
Kin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
Ok so it all started in the early 2000’s in Ghana, West Africa, a city called Kumasi. When my aunty , who was in the UK got me a kodak camera as a christmas gift. I carried it everywhere i went to.. school, church, everywhere. Even though i didnt know the use, all i knew was to put the battery and hit the shutter for it to ‘flash’ lol. So fast forward , 2015 I was then a teacher(Special needs, sign language) and an actor (i still am) , i decided to get a camera so i could film my auditions, rehearsals and also film my students while teaching them.. i did a little research on youtube, contacted a photographer friend who had a canon rebel t3i. i would rent it to practice what i learned on youtube on daily basis. After 4 months i started posting some pictures on my facebook and people loved it, the comments were encouraging so i bought my first camera , a Canon 5D mark ii. I started shooting free music videos, free weddings/ events, pleading with people to do a free photoshoot for them with the name ‘Yobaddicts’ just to better myself and they loved it, the passion and ambition grew bigger, i went commercial , relocated to the united states, rebranded to ‘Kin Yoba Shot it’ and now i’m here.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I do photograhphy(headshots/ portraits, wedding/events, commercial, advertising, still life and editorial) and videography( weddings, birthdays/events, recaps, music videos.
I know my work comes with my signature so i dont just put anything out there.lol. i am much particular about my Pre- Production and post production, i give like 70% attention to these two.
And like i always says, clients have subjective taste so i give my client 3 options to select 2 from and their choices with influence the outcome.. these options are, do they want their work..
A. Good (quality)
B. Fast
C. Cheap
And their 2 options determines the outcome.
I try as much as possible to make my clients comfortable and happy at all times so they can recommend me to other potential clients
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Like i said earlier, i was a teacher and i was earning a monthly income, so i had something little in my savings , which was not enough but God made a way, a cousin i had not heard from in years, Gideon, contacted me from Belgium on facebook and decided to invest in my craft. Apparently he had seen my works and had been following me on facebook
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my Honesty, patience, favor and grace from God and my craft/ creativity in general has been the main foundation of reputation in the market. Sometimes i get calls from places i least expected and i know that grace and favor spoke for me… i improvise a lot because growing up i was taught to get things done the hard way so i always try to get an option when clients feel its too late.
