We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kimyata Bryant. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kimyata below.
Kimyata, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
To be honest, it all started when I saw a t-shirt that I wanted but they didn’t have it in my size. Then I thought to myself, girl you can make that shirt yourself, maybe even something better. So I started researching how to make my own graphic tees. I researched what I need to make the shirt beside a blank tee. Once the research was done, I set out to by what was needed. Heat Press, vinyl cutter, and vinyl.
Once I made the shirt and wore it, my best friend saw the shirt and couldn’t believe I’d made it myself. Then she made an order that I know I charged way to low for :-) but I didn’t know what to charge really. I had not researched pricing. But after that she encouraged me to move forward with doing this full on. So I took her advice and did more research and came up with a name. YMG Apparel & Custom Designs. YMG came from my 1st company Yata Media Group of NC. So I kept the YMG because everyone knew me by YMG.
Making t-shirts puts me in a creative head space and I would not trade it for nothing in the world. I”m prayerful for the day I can do this full-time.
Kimyata, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m very honest in my dealings, if I can do it I’ll let you know and I’ll do my very best to give you a great experience. If I’m unable to do what a client is asking of me, I will let them know asap, so that they can move forward and find what they need.
I’ve yet to have a displeased client…… Fingers, eyes, toes crossed :-).
I’m proud of the clients that I have gained and that continue returning for my services.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I have what I consider a strong following on SM. I post a lot of Reels on FB, TT, and Instagram. Most of myself will working in my office filling orders.
My biggest and most important piece of advice……. POST POST POST POST!!!!!!!
LET UR WORK SPEAK FOR YOU!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I simply had to learn that I can’t short change myself. At first I was charging very low prices. Then I started researching what others was charging that are doing to same thing I was trying to do. So I had to get to a point to where I didn’t feel bad about raising my prices so that I made a profit.
