We were lucky to catch up with Kimmi-K Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimmi-K, appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
As a Brand Ambassador I have made some good money. I no longer work as a Brand Ambassador full time, just part time however the income does pay very well. I never took NO for an answer. The road was not easy, but I just kept going. When I first started doing Promotional/Brand Ambassador work it was so intimidating, I would get to an event and just stay back, being very quiet. I always am making sure the client is very pleased with my work, so that I can keep getting booked. My work ethic, my determination, positive attitude is why, I am continued to get booked with the same companies.
At one point I did get discouraged, I think that slowed down the process for me and I could’ve been further in my career if I didn’t give up.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started as a Full-Figured Model over 10 years ago. I have always been a FreeLancer. Networking with other models is what kept me booked. I have walked for some major runway shows, such as Deb’s Prom Line, Lane Bryant, God’s Princess, Nashville Fashion Week, and DMichelle Design’s, and as a Brand Ambassador I have worked with so many major corporations such as Chevy, Toyota, US Military, Yondr, Simply Face Wipes, Gilead, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Bevaimo Wines are just to name a few. All of them were great experiences.
What sets me apart from others, is that I am motivated, a self-starter, determined, reliable, and a team player. I’m always willing to go that extra mile on set for a photo shoot, or an event as a Brand Ambassador.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Well, a time I had to adapt to a change was when I had my daughter, and I didn’t want to send her to daycare, so I had to put my career on hold. I was out of work for over a year, so when I started back up things had changed dramatically in the field. There were different hiring managers, or some companies had found their “favorites”, so I had to re-submit my resume again, and work my way back up.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience just promoting myself online. I now have 2 Facebook account due to exceeding my friends on one page, and on my professional page I have over 12k followers. Instagram, I have a few thousand followers, and on my Twitter account I have a few thousand followers as well. I also have had lots of family/friends who shared photos of me, and/or told someone about me.
