We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimitra Black a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kimitra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Unfortunately I was raised by a television by day and by dancehall clubs at night. I was lonely a lot of my younger years so I looked to media, The Lizzy Maguire movie turned my world into a frenzy. Watching that made it clear to me that I wanted to perform music for the rest of my life. Being apart of the arts has always been in my makeup, now more than ever.
Kimitra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Kimmy Katarja, 27,
I’m a Drag queen, singer songwriter.
I’ve been doing drag for 6years now, I got into it like most girls in the scene.
You show up to shows, sneak in, make a scene with your look, gag the local girls and hope the like you and or remember you enough to see what you can do.
Music on the other hand was different, I lived in la for a while and out there I started writing for battle rappers, I had been writing for years but it felt good to get recognition but that pays nothing. I must’ve been 19 at the time. I later found drag and lead with that till the pandemic hit. Then I had to restructure, I landed on a site called The Social Distancing Festival. It was a festival organized online with creatives around the world to connect and collaborate virtually in their respective homes and disciplines. I applied on a whim got in, and I’ve been writing for myself ever since!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Simple, I would like to be the first black trans pop star. Name in lights the whole 9!
When you think of pop. You think Kimpiid.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
p.s. Burn this Letter
That whole documentary is a masterpiece and a valuable lens when things seem off in life.
