We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimiesha Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kimiesha , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was about 5 years old I remember seeing a Destiny’s Child live performance on television. I watched as Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle captivated the crowed. They didn’t just sing a concert they created an experience. At that moment I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I also grew up with music all around me. My mom traveled and sang before I was born, and my dad was a minister of music for our church.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I think something most people don’t know about me is I’ve sung in church choirs all my life but I decided to take the artistry side of things seriously when I became a teenager. I had my 1st paying gig by 17 and released my first single by 19 in 2015 titled “You Are”
The thing I am most proud of in my career is the fact that I represent Jesus in the way that I live my life. Even if I’m not singing a gospel song at a gig I try to make sure God is represented well with the way I carry myself.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to bring people joy with what I create. I want spread the love of God, peace , and joy with people thru my music.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My family and I moved to Atlanta last year to follow our dreams. We didn’t know anyone here, didn’t have jobs lined up, and didn’t know where to start. Some days I doubted this move, I thought we made a mistake. But I realized how much I’ve grown. If I had stayed where it was comfortable I would’ve never become who I am today. Leaving my hometown in Maryland was the best thing I could’ve ever done for my growth as a person, wife, mother, and artist. I was able to reinvent myself, and start over. It takes strength every day to keep going when everything around you is saying quit or turn back. But keep going! Growth is ahead!
