Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kimia Rafieian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kimia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Growing up in an academic family, I initially tried following the conventional path, assuming that’s what was expected. However, my family was unique in that they valued creative expression and always encouraged me to explore artistic pursuits alongside traditional academics. Going through various creative classes and musical experiences, I discovered that my strongest moments—the moments when I felt most authentic, and alive—were always linked to artistic expression.
For me, art allows for endless personal interpretation and the freedom to shape your path based on what you personally find meaningful, valuable, and beautiful. Whether I’m performing on stage or teaching, I get to use my own sense of artisanal beauty to choose what I share. Seeing how this resonates with others constantly reminds me that art is a universal language, unlimited by borders or spoken languages, a simple language yet deeply complex in the ideas and emotions it conveys.
Recognizing this was a pivotal moment because now my work as a pianist and educator doesn’t just fulfill me professionally; it energizes me creatively, brings me happiness, and provides a deep sense of fulfillment I might never have discovered otherwise.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a pianist and piano instructor based in NY/NJ. After completing my degrees, I’ve mostly pursued teaching, something I’ve been passionate about for the past eight years. Coming from a family of professors, teaching feels natural to me, and I genuinely love the rewarding feeling when my students thrive creatively.
Reflecting on my own experiences as a student, I realized that I wanted to be the supportive, inspiring instructor who encourages exploration and creative freedom—qualities I sometimes wished had been more present in my own musical education. I emphasize musicality and even incorporate physical methods like the Alexander Technique to help my students develop a holistic approach to piano playing. However, creativity and personal expression always remain central. I love that each student brings their unique interests and goals to lessons, and whether it’s performance, composition, or musical exploration, I ensure their individuality is celebrated.
I’m proudest when my students find their own voice in music and grow in confidence and artistry. Helping them achieve this brings me incredible joy and fulfillment, which motivates me continually as a pianist and educator.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my view, the best way for society to support artists and nurture a thriving creative ecosystem is to remain creatively engaged and genuinely curious. I believe the lack of support for artists often stems from people not fully understanding or experiencing the value art brings to our lives. One of the most effective ways to truly appreciate the arts is to actively participate—whether that means trying it yourself, studying it, or simply becoming more involved and educated about it.
By encouraging more creative education and active participation in artistic activities, society naturally becomes drawn to artists, their work, and artistic events. When people experience firsthand the joy, challenge, and beauty of creating or exploring art, they develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of its importance. This mutual exchange ultimately leads to greater support and a more vibrant, sustainable creative community.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think my primary goal is making art accessible, digestible, and enjoyable for everyone. While appreciation of beauty can be subjective, I believe there’s a type of music out there for every person. With increased exposure and a bit of nurturing, more people can discover the joy and excitement of musical experiences beyond their usual preferences.
I aim to open listeners’ ears and minds to diverse genres and various forms of musical expression, especially through the piano. This helps people tap into parts of themselves they may not have otherwise discovered. To me, it’s incredibly important that everyone gets the chance to explore their own musical curiosity and passion, and I’m committed to facilitating that journey.
