We were lucky to catch up with Kimia Penton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
“Where the Rain Falls”, was a very personal project and writing and producing it with my friend Kelyn Crapp was a wonderful experience. I looked back at several years of challenges and it felt like constant rainfall. But at the other end of it, I had grown so much! I had developed boundaries, resilience and self-love. Many of my songs are about general observations, but this project was personal and healing. Where the train falls, that’s where life grows.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started songwriting almost twenty years ago. I love the healing power in music and lyrics are my favorite way to communicate. As I started to grow and make connections in the industry, many producers and business folks wanted to change or control my sound and image. I got tired of it and created my own independent label, KimiaQProductions. With a background in organizational psychology, I combine my love for psychology and music to write songs about the human experience with the hope of encouraging greater self-awareness and personal fulfillment in the listener. I’m fortunate to be able to work with phenomenal musicians from UNT in Denton, and Dallas. I’ve released several projects of my own and I write and produce material for other artists. I’m passionate about music education and promoting live music. This year, I founded the Dallas Coalition for Live Music (@dclmfest) with some close friends. We host concerts and donate to music education programs. Our launching event is this July 14th at The Kessler Theater in Dallas! We have a fantastic lineup of artists from a variety of genres. Our goal is to make Dallas a premier music festival destination and to foster a community of creatives.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love hearing that my music has been comforting and encouraging to someone else. Sharing music fosters communication and authentic relationship. I’m a people person and I get a lot of joy out of fostering community, bringing musicians together and meeting people at our shows and events. There’s an act of service and giving in writing and performing.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My vision is for every creative to know that their work has value and that it is important for them to complete and share their projects. Not only is it fulfilling to complete a project, but so much good comes from putting our work out into the world. You never know who needs to see it and will be impacted by it. Sharing ourselves authentically through our art is a gift we need to nurture.
