We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimi Liopé a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kimi, appreciate you joining us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?

I grew up being a musician and dreaming of significant success in the industry. After years of blood, sweat, and tears I decided that, in my mid-20s, it was time to diversify my income. When you are an artist, the industry does the best it can at pigeonholing you and making you feel like you can’t do anything else. In reality, some of the most prominent artists make most of their money outside of the music industry. Don’t try to fit into their boxes, try an monetize your other passions as well.!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I started singing opera at 8 and Jazz at 16. I have lived and performed in San Francisco, New York, Honolulu, and LA. I am now a songwriter and singer as well as a life manager and Professional organizer for Creatives and Entrepreneurs. My company, Spaces of Mind, helps people align their physical and mental spaces to live a more streamlined and serene life. I songwrite and sing for TV and Film and releasing singles regularly under my artist name , King Klio.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

I grew up with a lot of alcoholism and mental illness in my family, and because of it I always felt I had to take care of others and became a complete doormat. I found myself always caring for others before I took care of myself. I have had to unlearn that and truly learn how to take care of myself first, and strangely everything else falls into place when I can remember that.

Any fun sales or marketing stories?

Marketing is everything for your business! whether it’s you as a creative or if you’re selling a service or product. It’s so important to leverage your network, referrals, online marketing, and social media to put your best foot forward. I took some time to actually study Google ads and Facebook ads some years ago and it changed my life! If you just youtube educational videos about ad spending and personal finance, your life can completely change.
