We were lucky to catch up with Kimery Elyn Wiltshire recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimery Elyn, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
For me, as for so many of us, the pandemic opened up new opportunities – scary ones to be sure, but also life-affirming. For over 25 years, I had headed up work to protect rivers, drinking water, and forests. The pandemic put a full stop on “business as usual” – no more hopping on planes to go this place and that, no more bringing people together for leadership trainings, no more in-person speeches – the list goes on! In the middle of what was probably the hardest time – that summer of 2020, I re-visited work that had given me joy for the past 30 years – reading the Tarot. I knew that using the Tarot for life-coaching would be something people would need once the pandemic began to disappear.
I picked the name “Elyn” (as in TarotbyElyn.com) because it was my paternal grandmother’s name, and is my middle name.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Three decades or so ago, a friend read the Tarot cards for me. I thought the cards were beautiful (it was the Thoth Tarot deck), but I was skeptical – too ‘new age-ish’ for me.
By the end of that reading, a path opened up for me. Mirrored were deep parts of my unconscious mind – feelings, insights, observations – they started to come out into the open. It felt like coming home.
Since then, I’ve used the cards for life coaching in hundreds of readings. My understanding has deepened, along with gratitude for the wisdom, and the kindness of these cards.
The Tarot doesn’t answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions; it doesn’t tell if you’ll win the lottery, or who you’ll marry. Instead, the Tarot, like dreams, uses symbology to reflect your sub- and unconscious mind – to act as a mirror of your feelings, hopes, and desires. My readings have helped clients become clear on what they want – and why.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I keep in touch with my clients, and potential clients, through a series of blogs on important cards in the Tarot deck. These blogs provide useful, and digestible information on the Tarot for the people on my distribution list, and also demonstrate my expertise and knowledge. These blogs are the basis for a book I’ll be publishing, which will be a central component of my developing marketing strategy.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
Thanks to the pandemic, people are comfortable with using Zoom. So, outside of direct expenses such as the cost of Zoom, the website, and a few ‘gadgets’ to make Zoom work better, the rest is sweat equity.
