We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Writt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
When I launched be HUE in January, 2021, it was definitely a whirlwind, but is also felt like the natural next step. I had just completed wellness coaching school at Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and instead of focusing on a more expected niche and clientele, I wanted to target those who were lacking inspiration because of their home environment. We were still distancing ourselves during the Pandemic and people were on top of each other using their bedroom as an office or their kitchen to home-school their kids — it was multi-purpose living that was not sustainable or functional. The coaching program I developed with be HUE paired my background in marketing/PR for interior designers and architects with techniques from my experience teaching yoga and meditation to create a holistic way of viewing one’s environment and get to the root of what makes someone motivated in a given space. Tapping into topics like Hygge, Feng Shui, Color Psychology and Chakras enabled clients to understand how their space impacted their mood and drive and ultimately how they could make an impact in that space.
Kimberly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up, I was drawn to color and texture — it must run in the family because my mom was in fashion and my sister in art. Our home was a sanctuary, a place I felt both invigorated by and entirely at peace. Some of my favorite memories involved curling up with my family to watch a movie in a multi-color blanket my sister and I would fight over, practicing yoga via VHS tape in our living room, making jewelry in my bedroom, or helping my parents with the next house project (they loved to entertain — and still do). Creativity was always brewing.
Jump to 2021, where I had been in the workforce for over 10 years and felt like there was something missing. Blame it on my “Manifesting Generator” personality but holding dual careers in yoga/meditation and marketing/pr for (primarily) interior and architect professionals sparked something within me. There had to be a way to serve both of the audiences I was already working with and fuse together a tailored program that addressed common stressors people experience while in their home. Hence, be HUE was born (following my graduation from IIN), where my mission is to empower home + design professionals and enthusiasts to — find their most vibrant selves — or uncover their true purpose in a given space.
I work with individuals to create a customized 6-week or 12-week “MOOD. MOLD. MAKE.” wellness coaching program (all virtual) that often includes meditation or yoga as well. I also host and participate in events and panels around relevant “Wellness in the Home” topics, e.g. “Using Feng Shui to Upgrade Your Nighttime Routine” or “How to Create a Sensory Experience without Overstimulating.” Additionally, I work with businesses on team coaching programs that introduce wellness practices into their company culture.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I love a good “spirit-serving” read and often those types of books are what inform my business ethos and and direct my programming. A few of my favorites include “Yoga Business Mastery” by Lucas Rockwood, “Think Like a Breadwinner” by Jennifer Barrett, “Human Design for Business” by Jamie Palmer, “Discover Your Dharma” by Sahara Rose and many others. I’m currently reading “Regenerative Business” by Samantha Garcia which parallels nature’s regenerative properties with business and talks about how we need to focus less on sustainability and more on regeneration, or leaving a place or situation better than when we got there. I love the concept.
I’m also a sucker for any interior design coffee table book and actually read them cover-to-cover. I’m always interested in the inspiration behind a space vs. just staring at a pretty end result.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
While it was unintentional (initially), my side hustle did in-fact morph into what is now be HUE. While working in PR/Marketing full-time and teaching yoga on the side around 2015, I noticed a lot of people attending my yoga classes were in the design industry. Whether that was because they needed to unwind from the stressors of their everyday or enjoyed the connection built in the space the same way a client does when they tour a finished home, I had an “aha moment” — this is when YOGA CURATED was born in 2016, which was a traveling yoga series I taught in design showrooms all over Chicago. It was meant to be a one-time thing (thank you Montauk Sofa!), but soon I was receiving requests from showrooms all over that saw the value in more intimate events that went beyond mingling with cocktail in hand. Fast forward to 2021 when I launched be HUE and the network I had built from YOGA CURATED offered familiarity for the industry to trust I could host an event or speak to the connection between wellness and design. Many of the speaking engagements, events, partners and most importantly friends originated from that side hustle, and I do think I was manifesting something bigger at the time without even fully realizing it.
