Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kimberly Umetiti. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kimberly , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success requires courage, accountability, integrity, and consistency. I have been able to thrive and maintain a steady stream of business over the years by prioritizing exceptional customer service. I am committed to resolving any issues that arise, even if it means taking a personal loss. I believe in conducting my business with the highest standards of integrity and treating each client with kindness and respect.
Clients value honesty, and being transparent in this business goes a long way. Cutting corners and engaging in dishonesty are often the main reasons many small businesses fail. I believe that maintaining integrity is crucial for long-term success and earning lasting trust with clients.

Kimberly , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kim (KSLAYED), and I’ve been a hairstylist for 19 years, starting with my very first client at the age of 12. Over the years, my passion for what I do has only grown stronger. I began by posting flyers at school and leaving my business cards around town, and now, I’m fortunate enough to be so booked that I hardly need to advertise.
Through this journey, I’ve learned that the key to running a successful and thriving business lies in consistency, honesty, accountability, and kindness. Kindness, in particular, is often underestimated in this industry. The importance of treating clients with the utmost care and respect cannot be overstated. Building rapport fosters familiarity, creating a safe and comfortable space for clients that encourages long-term relationships.
What sets me apart from other hairstylists is my genuine care for the well-being of everyone who sits in my chair. I’m not just here to style hair—I’m here to be a listening ear, a prayer buddy, a shoulder to cry or laugh on and whatever else you need in the moment. My clients come to me on both the best and the toughest days of their lives, and I make sure to create a space where they feel comfortable, valued, and supported. My goal is to ensure every visit is not only a peaceful experience but a truly enjoyable one.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
In any business, it’s essential to identify the demands within the industry and then brainstorm and research ways to meet those needs effectively. By doing so, you can scale your business and create additional revenue streams within the same framework, driving both growth and sustainability.
For my business, it made perfect sense to start offering luxury hair bundles, as my target audience is right in my chair every day. People value convenience and are willing to invest in services that make their lives easier. For my clients, I’ve created a one-stop shop experience. In addition to providing custom units, I offer coloring installation services, and high-quality extensions. This comprehensive approach allows me to better serve my clients while also growing my business.
In the future, it is my hope to expand even further by creating my own line of products and tools. By developing high-quality, tailored items that align with the needs of both my clients and the industry, I can continue elevating the service I provide while contributing to the broader beauty community.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve been a perfectionist my whole life, and while it drives me to constantly strive for excellence, it can sometimes stifle me in the worst ways. I’m often hard on myself and demand the best from me at all times. Over the years, this mindset has taken a toll, contributing to anxiety and depression. However, through prayer, determination, and tenacity, I’ve learned to overcome these challenges. It takes real courage to show up, even when you don’t feel like it or you’re not at your best mentally. In this industry, unlike many other jobs, the pressure is heightened—especially when it involves important events like weddings, show days, baby showers, or birthdays. Me not showing up to work means someone’s day gets ruined. Pushing through difficult moments to show up for my clients is not always easy, but it’s deeply rewarding. This journey has fostered a resilience in me that extends beyond my work and positively impacts many areas of my life.
I have great work ethic, and I’m not a quitter. I’m committed to delivering the highest quality of service, no matter the challenge.
