Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kimberly Tomlinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. When you were first starting out, did you join a firm or start your own?
I joined RE/MAX Alliance right after passing my real estate test. Everything went so quickly after that moment given I thought it could take a few “tries”. It’ always been the right choice for me to join a larger firm. I wanted a brand and RE/MAX Alliance provided that along with a lot of training and development steps. Of course I felt nervous. Scared! How would I find clients? How long would it take? Could I make money in a profession that is 100% commission based? It all came together though and faith in my abilities and support of friends and family went a long way in pushing my success up hill.
Kimberly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an avid tennis player and a below average golfer but sports has always been at part of finding my joy. Real estate is a 100% fit for my personality. I enjoy helping people in any stage and place in life. I use motivational interviewing designed to assist clients in using their own voice to tell me what is important to them. Caring about what they say, not what I say, is key to developing a closer business and personal relationship. When I HEAR my clients share their unique needs or situations, and I’m not just LISTENING, it makes for a much better bond. Alternately, I also mentor and coach other agents. My bucket is so filled by seeing the success of others. All of us deserve joy in our professions and I like to share the happiness I have in real estate with others.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I met with a retired couple who were selling a home that they built from the ground up years ago. They had raised their kids in this house but were now pivoting and deciding to down-size so they could move onto their next adventure. I remember I was competing with other realtors and was the 2nd person in the door to share how I could help them. My client was a well-known business man in Fort Collins. Successful and quite driven. He told me everything there was to know about the home, what they needed, what their plans were and as his other-half sat quietly waiting I felt it time to see how she was coping. I remember asking Tony if I could ask Shelly a question or two. He agreed and I asked Shelly what it felt like to move from a home in which she had so many memories. Three daughters were now adults and just as they had built this home, she had built a strong family of women who had grown into mothers themselves. She was emotional to say the least. She had a lot to share about her feelings and asking her brought a sense of authentic care to our conversation. When I left, Tony told me that they’d call to inform me of their choice in a few days. I drove away from the home, put my favorite music on the radio and smiled knowing that I did my best. Within 10 minutes, I received a phone call. Tony told me that Shelly was only comfortable working with me and my take away is this… the more you care, the more they care. This is where it begins and ends and we can never forget that people have houses they’ve made into safe havens. Change is hard. Moving on is difficult and I feel a responsibility to others transitioning into new lives and memories.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Do your best, always. There will be easy transactions. There will be difficult transactions but always remember to do your best. I am now mostly referred to my clients by past clients and I believe it’s because I never forget to be honest, open and negotiate to the full support of my buyers and sellers.
