We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kimberly Thon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kimberly below.
Kimberly , appreciate you joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I started out paper crafting, making handmade greeting cards and invitations. I did it for a few years and honestly just didn’t see it going anywhere. I bought a used sewing machine from a garage sale and stated making small items to add to my booth for craft events. I wasnt happy with sales and I had a vision in and ran with it. My husband thought I was nuts. I took these dolls to an Art Fair and they sold really well and that’s what I’ve been doing for the last few years.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve worked in the cosmetology industry for 38 years, business has slowed down over the years and wanted to supplement my income. I’ve always been an artsy person and wanted to follow that passion. My creative works are one of a kind dolls that fall into an animated slightly horror genre they are all given a name and their birthday is the day they were completed. I start with a couple different prints of fabric , draw a pattern and go from there. I also make some items that are primitive folk art inspired for Halloween and Christmas.
I think what sets me apart from other artists is that I don’t really see this type of item at Art Fairs and most people love it.
Some of my proudest moments are repeat customers or someone stopping by my booth telling me they have a piece I have made.
I love doing custom orders, the trust to create my vision of what someone wants, is an incredible feeling.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I honestly think it’s because my items are not the ‘norm’ and most people tell me my booth is refreshing to see in the art field.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey is seeing people smile and laugh a little when they step inside my booth. Getting an email or a post to my social media of a photo of one of my items in someone’s home is also so incredibly
rewarding.
