We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Shores recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The interior design business as well as flipping homes is not the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of mission work. For me, the concept of mission work often conjures images of distant lands and third-world settings. While mission trips are a beautiful thing, I was never called to do mission work in that capacity. However, as I matured into adulthood, my understanding of mission work underwent a profound transformation. I realized that my mission work did not have to revolve around going on mission trips with a church, instead, my mission work could be right here in my hometown. Becoming a wife and mother to two precious boys became my life work. Unfortunately, after several years, I found myself thrust into unexpected circumstances. Navigating the complexities of early adulthood and single motherhood was a challenge. Yet, life, presented an unexpected turn of events – the arrival of a supportive partner who illuminated a path of unwavering love and encouragement. Soon, I would become his wife and we would add two more precious boys to our crew. With his steadfast support and a shared passion for revitalizing homes, we left corporate America and my husband, Michael, and I embarked on a daring venture into the realm of house flipping. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle of our family life and career, a profound realization dawned on my 32nd birthday – a calling to serve our community in times of adversity. Witnessing the aftermath of natural disasters, from the ravages of Hurricane Michael to the recent onslaught of tornadoes, a sense of purpose crystallized within me. Through many moments of fervent prayer, I discovered that my mission transcended the mere act of house flipping; it encompassed a deeper purpose – the transformation of houses into homes. Thus, my journey from adversity to purpose culminated in a mission rooted in compassion and resilience – a testament to the transformative power of love, faith, and unwavering determination. In the pursuit of our shared vision, we continue to navigate the intricate landscape of house flipping, driven by my steadfast commitment to make a difference in our community with interior design; transforming one home at a time. This is my purpose, my calling, and my passion. I love my hometown very much and to be able to serve them in a way that not only brightens or updates their home, but their life, is important to me.
Kimberly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kimberly Shores. I am a wife and mom to four rambunctious and sweet boys; Elias, Titus, Isaiah, and Kaleb. I am located in a small town in Northwest Florida called Marianna. When I’m not working to keep my large family running like a well oiled machine, you can find me escaping into the world of art. I have a love and passion for cooking, painting, drawing, decorating, and flipping homes. Being able to work in a industry that allows me to be creative is a dream come true. My husband, Michael, and I embarked on a risky and exciting venture of house flipping six years ago. We have a shared passion for real-estate and flipping homes. Through our experiences, I quickly fell in love with interior design and every aspect of it. Even though I dived head first into the world of design several years ago, it wasn’t until I realized my deep desire for helping others revitalize their houses into homes they truly love. It has been a long journey of gathering all the necessary tools to open an interior design business, however, I launched Four Buds Interiors a boutique design firm in January 2024.
This design firm offers a full range of interior design services, including color consultations, residential full design, residential refresh, commercial refresh, and the expert call. Whether you are looking to refresh a single room or renovate an entire home, I am here to bring your vision to life. Our process consists of a straightforward six-step procedure. This includes the complimentary discovery call, in-home consultation, design concept, sourcing materials, install day, and finally, the unveiling. At four buds interiors, our goal is prioritizing character and interest over perfection. Every space that I design, it is my goal to blend various styles that my client loves while maintaining a highly functional environment incorporating ingenious storage solutions.
I bring a unique and creative perspective to the table, drawing from my various roles as well as renovating our own home. As a large family of 6 intertwined within a 3 bed, 1 bath home; I embarked on the journey of revitalizing our personal home into a 4 bedroom, 2 bath haven that is functional, visually appealing, and incorporating multiple storage solutions. The rich tapestry of my family life and multifaceted design ventures has lead to my ability to foster a true sense of home.
Design is not just my profession, it is my passion.
I am committed to instilling in each project, regardless of size, with an enthusiastic spirit and a steadfast dedication to achieving excellence.
All of my design efforts are shown through our Instagram page: fourbudsinteriors. Here you can find all of our past and ongoing flips, personal home renovations, as well as client renovations.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing a clientele for me has been social media. While social media has its many pros and cons, I can fully attest to the positive influence it has on a business. We live in a world now that social media is the hot spot for showcasing your talents and growing your business. While I am still in that growing phase both on social media and in my new interior design business, I have no doubt in my mind that without social media, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Sharing our story and showcasing our flips has led to many people within our community reaching out for help within their own homes. Viewing what we have been able to accomplish and the keen eye I have with design materials has built a trust with others that I don’t believe would have taken place without social media.
I am grateful for the positive impact social media has had and I am looking forward to seeing how social media continues to help grow my business.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A particular circumstance shines boldly in my mind. A year and a half ago, my husband and I embarked on a new fixer upper. We decided that we would not sub out any of the work, instead, we would hire a contractor. A goal that we had been building up to over the years. After meeting with several contractors, we chose one that we were impressed by. He began work immediately and showed signs of hard work, determination, honesty, and loyalty. Aspects that we look for within our business. Half way through the renovation, the contractor abandons us. Without notice, he and his crew stopped worked immediately. After multiple call attempts and a deadline quickly approaching, I sprung into action. With a few phone calls made, I was able to have a new crew finish out the project a week before the deadline.
However, the old contractor showed up with his crew one day expecting to work and get paid. They promised to help out with the final work that needed to be done. While I appreciated the comeback, a lesson was to be learned. I let this contactor know that we had an agreement and he failed on his part. While I am appreciative of the efforts to come back, I did not appreciate the lack in communication and loyalty to our original agreement. So, I let him know that the amount I needed to pay my new crew was coming out of his pay. That would make it even – fair across the board, While it was not something he enjoyed, he understood.
So, in a moment of complete chaos, I was able to overcome an obstacle and walk away knowing all was right in the world as well as who to work with and who not to.
