We recently connected with Kimberly Seabrook and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think there are different levels to success. Some people won’t feel they are successful until they have a mansion, fancy cars and millions of dollars in their account. Then there are those like me who have contributed to hip hop, students, families, men and women who have been formerly incarcerated and more. I feel that when you can help someone make a difference or help others see something in themselves that they couldn’t see is a success in itself. When you can help get someone out of dark space and provide light to their situation is a success, When you can help create a book for someone who has been bullied and tell their story, while helping other children is a success story. In my eyes what it takes to be successful is believing in the fact that you serve a purpose in this world and you have to do everything you can to achieve it. Whether it means being homeless, whether it means going a little hungry on some days, making sacrifices because you cant afford a comfortable pair of sneakers but you can afford to provide your services to help your community and putting in the work to pursue you career. My most recent success story would be me creating a book titled :” The GoodLook Kids” where it is three kids with disabilities but they have super powers and this book discusses CeeJay getting bullied. CeeJay is a real person and I highlighted his story to help bring awareness to bullying. This book has helped kids across the globe, those that I work with and the actual character in helping building self-esteem, self-love and confidence. Success is measured by how much love you put into your work, your passion, the community, the people and most importantly yourself.
Kimberly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Kim GoodLook Seabrook, poet, author, entrepreneur, mentor, teacher, advocate, community leader, mother, friend and more. To bring you back to how I started was all through poetry. I was living in Connecticut at the time where I decided to pursue my career when I got fired from my job, now mind you I sold 35 cars in my dept but was told my numbers were not good enough. I knew at that moment I did not want to work for anyone and that this poetry thing could be bigger than just performing. I ended up homeless for 2 years but I stood my ground with performing and getting my name everywhere. Performed for some major comedians at major comedy clubs. However, my goal was to really get into the communities and then the schools which I did. My first school I got into under my own brand was one for young girls who were in the judicial and foster care system. I knew that once I accomplished this, there was so much more that I could do. I manifested and worked hard for it all. It took a lot of sacrificing, tears, blood and sweat but I did it. Today I have online clients who have special needs, I have taught in several schools though out NYC and there are just many more opportunities that are always coming my way. I currently have a publishing agency “The GoodLook In Books” where I help people become self published authors. My “GoodLook” brand is more than just books, I am a business in itself and I also provide workshops for young ones, teens and adults to help them navigate through this thing called life with creative solutions. What that means is I provide a safe space to have open discussions about various topics, it could be about home, drugs, bullying, incarceration, whatever the energy says to talk about that is what we do. I am not the average teacher where everything is laid out and it has to be done this way or that way. No because life is never this way or that way, there are several curve balls and I like to make sure that my clients or students know that I can relate and adapt to their situation and/or feelings. There are so many things that I am proud of, when a student tells me that I have opened something in them they never knew they had is definitely a highlight, when I published an eBook for my students work on Amazon and to see their happiness from it, when my son says he is extremely proud of me and says I deserve the world is a highlight. When I had someone in rehab use my book titled “Memory Lane” ~Reminisce with Me Through Healing Poetry~ for his time to reflect on his past through his rehabilitation is another highlight. I am thankful to have several moments in my life that I am proud of. What I want people to know about The GoodLook brand is that I provide a service through healing, love, attention and passion. That I can really make this world a better place and even if I don’t touch the world right?! I have touched enough for them to pass on the lessons and the energy that they have received from me to help and continue this legacy of mine to bring light to these dark situations. To bring hope to hopeless, to bring strength to the weak, to bring courage to those who fear, to bring love to those who don’t know what love is and so on.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think non-creatives feel as if you can’t pursue a career off of your creativity. I remember when I decided not to go back to work for Corporate America, man did I get so much slack from people especially my family. They didn’t think it could happen, they kept offering me assistance in finding a job and made me feel very disappointed in THEM, not in myself. Like how is it that you don’t have the faith in me? How is it that you don’t see the bigger picture? The reality is that no one is really to understand what your passion and purpose is, they have to figure out their own. The interesting outcome is that those same people now want to be entrepreneurs, they no longer want to work for anyone lol. I guess my work has inspired them even if they don’t say it themselves. The non-creative may also be afraid of letting go of what is the norm to them, they are afraid of change, fear of having to sacrifice but used to routine. Sometimes they can’t see beyond what they have been taught to do, go to school, get a degree, go to work, come home and that is their lives. While us creatives see so much color, see different views of life, see many opportunities and are not afraid to walk into those doors and listen, many of them doors don’t always provide the best option but we won’t know unless we enter them, the great thing about it is you can always turn around and exit and keep opening doors until its the right one.
If you are a non-creative I just ask that you try and keep an open mind, not all success stories have to do with obtaining a degree or working in Corporate America.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I don’t necessarily have a story but here is some background. One thing about social media, if you are not in-tuned it can make you feel so out of the loop. What I mean in-tuned, I mean spiritually because the social media world would have you feel like you are not accomplishing enough, you are not pretty or sexy enough, you are not worthy to have a presence. From day one until now, you will see who I am on screen and off screen. I never act as if someone I am not, I don’t always have to be dressed up to post a pic, you will never see me with tons of makeup or showing my “Assets” to gain followers or get likes. I am always genuine, I am very transparent and I always try to help others get through a rough day. My energy radiates on that screen just as it does when I walk into a room. I do remember partnering with a young lady on an event and she had about 15k followers, where I had about 4k at the time but in the event all the people who came to support were from me. I say this to show you stop worrying about your followers and focus on those who support you. Numbers look good to some but if they are only there to comment when you look pretty and not anything about supporting your business I would suggest you reevaluate your social media presence. BE YOURSELF!
