Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kimberly Salmon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kimberly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I am officially a Live Wedding Painting but recently I’ve began custom wedding gown painting! I love creating custom pieces in general from life’s milestones so I believe this is such a fun twist on it all.
Kimberly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Of course! So I began with standard painting commissions, as many self employed artists do, and soon gravitated towards heirlooms in the wedding industry. I do mostly on site portrait painting at weddings for clients but I also do special pieces for anniversaries and engagements as well. I’d say the problem of not having an intimate and special piece from your wedding or event is a problem I definitely solve for my clients.
Recently I had the pleasure of hand painting a wedding gown and modeling my creation for an editorial. I am so proud of that because it has been a dream for me! I can’t wait to begin that next chapter in my business.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I definitely had to unlearn the idea of having a “niche” in the art field. Yes it’s good to have a focus, but it is also okay to experiment and have multiple avenues that you love and want to share.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Client experience. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have that immediate connection with your client and ALSO carry it through to the end. Always check in and ask questions and be open to criticque. It may be hard at times but it makes a stronger artist out of you and business owner.
