We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Riddick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kimberly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always been very artistic, I loved to draw and paint as a child and into my teen years. and I always loved all things beauty. My love for makeup stated early. I did my own makeup for prom. And even tweak my makeup for my wedding. On my wedding day I had a makeup artist come to do my makeup. While I loved the application, There were areas I wanted to make my own, so I pulled out my kit and added a little razzle dazzle to my face. That was the day I decided I wanted to help brides create their bridal day look. Every bride deserves to look and feel like a queen on their special day. I have a passion and a desire to help brides feels beautiful on their wedding day. That was the day I decided to step out on faith and pursue my dream of makeup artistry.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My first wedding was in 2012, my GOD sister allowed me to assist her a bridal party by doing the bridesmaids makeup. She took a chance on me and that paved the way to me stepping out on my own. I started building my kit and portfolio. Taking opportunities in local fashion shows and photoshoot to get my name out there and now most of my clients are word of mouth. My most challenging moment I think was having to do 14 faces in one day for a wedding by myself. That wasn’t the expected number for the day so I didn’t have much time to look for another artist. But with much prayer and faith in my god given gift I was able to pull it off just in time for the nuptials. With that difficult task I now challenged myself with timing on all client and having a policy in place so that I am well prepare for last minute wedding day mishaps.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The thing that I believe built my reputation in this market it my professionalism and spirit. I often am told that I am very professional and have a calming spirit. Wedding days are always extremely stressful, I am always there to not only do makeup but to also bring a since of calm to the bride on her special day.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of clients for me have been word of mouth. I believe that people always remember how they were treated during a service and I always strive to be a positive influence. Makeup is not just a business but a ministry. Often time while doing makeup I find myself listening to my client talk about the things that they maybe going through in life and both sharing stories of how we went through things in life and How GOD brought us through those thing. It’s almost like a therapy session for us both.
