We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Ogden a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
For my entire adolescent life, I’d been an only child of two working class parents. I’d known from a young age that I’d wanted to do something productive with my introspective time. I’d also discovered a particular fondness for the arts, and I wanted to share this with as many people as possible.
Throughout my early career years, I’d obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree while instructing painting classes. Attending school while working had allowed me to build academic discipline while also getting field experience. This was the first time in my life I’d pursued art professionally. I felt that it was beautiful and fulfilling to have the privilege of seeing my ideas come to fruition- and to receive recognition for my efforts.
Essential skills in design are understanding the elements therein. How would this piece look if this object was larger? How do these two colors look together? Will these words clash against this background? Is this a flattering composition? Creating art, for me, is having continuous conversations like this in my own head. Lately, I’ve been experiencing a lack of consumer passion since the rolling out of artificial intelligence. I would love to continue to pursue the arts, while showcasing that an algorithm cannot replace human creativity or innovation.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kimby. I’ve loved art from the age of four, and I was fortunate to be surrounded by those whom supported and celebrated my talents. After obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree, I’d opened my mind to pursue media I hadn’t previously worked with before; this led to me instructing for art companies.
Through this opportunity, I’ve developed the ability to use new media in a very short amount of time. I’ve learned that instructing is one of the best tools in learning for myself. I’ve met many fellow creative people, and I’ve made deep connections with others that transcend space and time. My current goal is to give back to art as it’s given so much to me. I value every opportunity to share my work and knowledge with others.
My work consists of drawings, paintings, digital pieces, sculptures, and repurposed objects. I am very open-minded and will truly work with any variety of media presented to me.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to communicate with others visually. Generally, we rely on verbal communication in order to get out points across. The caveat in this is that many people may not be able to clearly communicate their thoughts or emotions verbally alone. Sharing my work with others has allowed me to communicate with others and break difficult barriers in human connection.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve recently had to move from Connecticut to Texas in the United States. This was, in the short term, a very significant shift for me. I’ve had to start from the ground up in the sense of getting my name out into the world of the south. Art is perceived differently here, and values are different. It’s been a difficult process to remain true to myself- and I’m still learning in the realm of making connections.
