Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kimberly Ni’Cole. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kimberly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’m someone who is always eager to learn, evolve, and apply. I’ve learned runway modeling and entrepreneurship by intentionally getting around people who were already doing what I wanted to do. I understand that in today’s society the term mentorship or coach seems over-used however it really has been the life hack to advancing in my skills. Knowing what I know now, to speed up my business growth and modeling network, I would have started networking as soon as I got accepted into college. The skills that were most essential have been exercising high emotional intelligence, obtaining financial literacy, self awareness, and BRANDING. I wish I really had known about branding and marketing much sooner in my career.
One of the obstacles that stood in the way of learning was my mindset. I know I’m not the only one. Sometimes we tend to get in our heads with ideas or questioning our worth. That was me being over critical to myself.
Kimberly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those wondering who Kimberly Ni’Cole is, I am a creative, full figured runway model and business professional. I tapped into entrepreneurship, blogging and Full-Figured Runway fashion in my early 20’s after graduating from Clark Atlanta University. During my time there, I studied Mass Media Arts with a concentration in television, radio, and film. I entered into the industry of entertainment by appearing in background roles as well as writing blog entries (with integrity) for some well-known blogs and news outlets that many see today. For some privacy and Non-disclosure purposes, I will not release names. However, my pen name has always been Kimberly Ni’Cole. I eventually was allowed to integrate beauty, fashion, and business ownership topics into my creative career which opened many doors. I have been published twice, attended New York Fashion Week, and walked in over 25 shows in my career. This also prompted me to start a sole-proprietorship classified business and obtain affiliations with various corporations. I started to understand the importance of ownership and financial literacy once I started networking as well as receiving mentorship.
As a runway model and entrepreneur there are hosts of challenges I am solving. We’d be here all day if I named them all but a few I would say that as a model, I get to assist designers in selling their fashion. Coming up with creative ways to present designer merchandise for their audience is always fun. Runway has also allowed me the platform to encourage many to own who they are in a bold way. To be free and take up space. I think it is really cool to have people come to me after a show to tell me how much they want to embark on their confidence journey. Some even tell me that they want to become models! I believe in them too.
As a small business owner I provide exclusive eco-friendly products to clients in categories of home, beauty, and wellness. I was inspired to live a different and more holistic lifestyle after obtaining a weight loss goal I set for myself over 10 years ago. I wanted to take care of my skin, my home, and my health. I began using the products before I became a walking bill-board for them. Now I get to share the products I love and change my life with the people I love. Check out Tailored Empires!
What sets me apart is that I am always willing to learn and evolve. Change is difficult for most of us but your attitude towards change is where the magic happens! I want to inspire and encourage others to follow their dreams no matter where they are in life or how crazy it sounds to others. If I can do it, I am no different than you.
I am most proud of becoming a mother and still having opportunities come to me. I think often the world defines motherhood as a death sentence to young women. As though we are to relinquish our dreams or forget that we were women before we became mothers. Our children are our greatest supporters. To any parent out there that believes that they should put their dreams on pause or let them go, please do not. There are resources and communities available.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Absolutely. I’ve had to pivot a few times in my life but one that sticks out to me is life during and after college. I started out as in music concentrating on flute as a primary instrument. I eventually switched to Mass Media Arts where I previously said my concentrations were in television, radio, and film however in my senior year I realized how much I liked journalism and speaking my opinion on current events. When I graduated college I had no idea where to start in my career. I took jobs here and there to support myself until my path started unfolding. I had to learn that change is inevitable and it will happen. Might as well accept it and roll with the punches.
I want to let your audience know that it is totally ok to pivot in life!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Reading is a love language of mine LOL! I have a top 5 I still study to this day!
1. The Magic of Thinking Big
2. How to Win Friends and Influence People
3. The Millionaire Maker
4. How to Have Confidence and Power
5. Emotional Intelligence 2.0
I would also encourage anyone to seek a coach or mentor in their field of interest.
