Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kimberly Morris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kimberly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Scrub Soaps etc. is our home-based health and wellness company. My husband and I started this business back in March of 2020, soon after the quarantine began, making hand sanitizers with the CDC recommended alcohol content. While trying to come up with an effective recipe for hand sanitizers, I did some research on other DIY bath and body products. As the months went on, my line of products increased to include: soaps, bath bombs, body butters, body scrubs, salves for hands and feet, beard oils, solid body lotion bars, and shower steamers. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life by meeting people’s needs through creating chemical-free natural products that provide safe and healthy alternatives for personal body care. All of our products are handcrafted with natural and organic ingredients. In the beginning, we mostly sold through Etsy due to the pandemic, but as things began to open back up, we started selling at local Farmer’s markets in Hartland and Frisco. After months of building our brand and product line, we have decided to sell primarily at the Dallas Farmers market.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been a nurse and respiratory therapist for over ten years and if my experience has taught me anything, it’s that you always have to be prepared and use your time wisely. The lockdowns made it really hard for us to get our products into the hands of potential customers. I can do my best to describe a scent or the feel of one of our products, but it’s not like having the actual product in your hands. So we made sure to be the best online service we could be. When a customer places an order, I make sure it goes out as soon as possible, just like Amazon. We even started a mailing list called the Scrub Club. We use it to share sales and new products with our customers. Since the lockdowns have been lifted and some restrictions have been removed, we have been able to sell in person. The folks at the Dallas Farmer’s Market have been really great and always stop by to tell us how much they like our shop. Our customer base are health conscience men and women. They want a healthy alternative for personal body care. We fill this void because we use domestic and imported ingredients that are sustainably and ethically sourced.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I used the $1200 stimulus check that the government mailed to most Americans to start my business. I was fortunate enough that I didn’t need the money for bills or anything else at the time. I used the money to buy raw materials to make my products.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I started my business, my product line had a lot of products like 15 or more items. After selling for a few months I realized not all of my products were selling at the same rate. After doing some reach, I decided to cut the products that were not selling well. It does not make sense to continue buying ingredients to make products that are not selling. Adjusting my product line helped my business save money. I don’t have as many products to keep up with.
