We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Mitchell recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kimberly , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?

I have always loved marketing since I was a child. I decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in communication studies with an emphasis in public communication and media as well as a minor in journalism. However, my education hasn’t stopped there. As i continue to grow in my field I have found that signing up for free courses such as HubSpot Acadamy or becoming a LinkedIn Premium member has helped me grow my skills over the years. (I am also a bit of a nerd and love learning new things)

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Hey! My name is Kim I have a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Stanislaus in Communication Studies, and a Minor in Journalism. I have been married to my husband for almost 5 years and am the mom to the most amazing little boy. My parents have owned their own business for over 30 years so I have always been around an entrepreneur my entire life. In 2017 I started working for a small boutique while going to college. While working for Urban Outlaw I learned the ins and outs of running a business, photography, and marketing. In 2019 I got the opportunity to purchase the boutique and continued running it until moving out of California. At that time I decided to shut down the boutique and open my digital marketing company. I have always loved helping other small business owners find their audience online and connecting women in business with each other.

The services that I offer are custom Done-For-You social media management, Social media and Google Ads, Photography, and some web design.
What sets me apart is my experience of having a small business and failing. I am a firm believer that you always learn the most from your mistakes. I can now take the knowledge that I have fought for and help other business owners not make the same mistakes that I did.

Kickin Rose Media is named after my love of the western fashion industry and my background in showing horses.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

2021 was a year that was really difficult for everyone in the world. At the time I was a new mom, just moved from California to Idaho. Coming out of 2020 owning an online clothing boutique was really challenging. You still couldn’t do any shows and everyone was starting to save their money rather than spend. I was at a point where I needed to let something go and that something was my boutique. I didn’t want to give up on the dream of being my own boss, however, I needed something that had less overhead and took up less physical space. So I closed down my store and pivoted to open Kickin Rose Media, and reignited my dream of helping other small business owners with their digital marketing.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?

People struggle with seeing the need for digital marketing specifically social media. They think it is all games and people shaking their behinds on camera. However, that is not the case. Customers want access to you, the people behind the brands. They want to see and feel seen by companies, entrepreneurs, etc.

I always see hesitation when I talk about social media to business owners. They think you don’t need a strategy, they think its okay to post whatever they want whenever they want. But then turn around and wonder why they are not growing or are not connecting with their ideal client.

My biggest advice is to bring on a digital marketing specialist as soon as you can and make sure you have someone who will collaborate with you and educate you.
