We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kimberly McCarver. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kimberly below.
Alright, Kimberly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Both of my parents are dedicated hard workers. Watching them work diligently in their respected career paths showed me to save your money, because the unexpected will happen and to keep making money. Even when they retired, they continued to do side jobs that made them happy and extra coins. That showed me that I can continue to work my business, be a diligent employee but also know that I can be happy once I retire.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started TheKimberz.com after the birth of my daughter. I had began experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety and PTSD, which lead to ultimately being diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Following this diagnosis, I began to educate myself on postpartum depression, anxiety and PTSD. One effective strategy that I employed over the years is journaling my thoughts, feelings and emotions in thekimberz blog. I detail my life struggles in an effort to help other mothers and women know they’re not alone and they can get out .
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I remember when I found out I was pregnant with my son, my ob/gyn told me I would most likely experience postpartum depression and anxiety again, she was right. This time I was more equipped with knowledge, I had better benefits, a doula and a much more supportive partner but it still happened. Nothing could’ve prepared for PPD & PPA with two children. The number one thing I did was be intentional. I asked for help, I went outside, I continued to blog, I took sound advice, and took supplements that helped with my mood. The second time around was tough, but I’m tougher.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The main lesson I had to unlearn was to not be afraid to ask for help. Blogging for me means transparency and honesty. Realizing that once it’s out there, it’s out there forever. I know that mental health isn’t always front and center, especially in the black community but I also knew I wanted to disrupt that narrative. Once I figured out how and what I wanted to do, I had to ask for help setting up the hosting site and back office. Thankfully I have a bomb sister friend who helped and understood me.
