We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kimberly Loomis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kimberly below.
Alright, Kimberly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project that I have experienced is returning to the beauty school I graduated from as an advisor and member of the curriculum development board. Begin able to share my journey in our industry, being honest about the struggles and successes with the future cosmetologists hopefully inspires the kids as I once was. Recently I was asked to be a judge for the State Level Skills Competition for Ohio. Being able to see the younger generations, ideas, visions, and creativity was a humbling experience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
At an early age I always loved being creative and enjoyed all different forms of art. I started coloring my barbie dolls hair with my mothers eye shadows to eventually attending vocational school and entering my career as a cosmetologist 20 years ago. Over the last 20 years, I have been able to do some incredible things within our industry. I have been able to do everything from working internationally as an educator, worked backstage at hair shows and photoshoots, and currently am a stylist for New York Fashion Week. In my free time, I like to help my local community and industry professionals by visiting and teaching with beauty school students, helping to develop their curriculum. Most recently I was selected as a Face of Sola for the Sola Salon community. My salon is a cruelty free, vegan salon that offers gender free pricing and have partnered with the Dress Code Project and Strands for Trans. I am also a Green Circle Salon, where I recycle 98% of my salon waste and am 100% carbon neutral. My motto has always been, “Good vibes for your hair, and the planet!”
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Through my experience as an international educator I found a passion that I had always know existed but never fully manifested. I love being a stylist, working with my clients to give them the best experience possible, however the feeling of sharing the love for learning that I have always had made me want to pursue starting my own unbranded education line. I am pleased to announce that in 2023 this dream will become a reality.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
If I could go back in time and talk to younger Kimberly I would tell her to believe in herself. This industry can be hard at times but you can go a long way by setting goals and working hard towards them. Do not let the non-believers impact your goals and your successes. Growth is going to be uncomfortable, put your intentions into positive movements. Be authentic and be original.
