We recently connected with Kimberly Licht and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kimberly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
One night during quarantine 2020 my son wanted to read a book about Shabbat at bedtime. There was a recipe at the very end for making Hala. He asked if we could make it, and that was the beginning of a new adventure! My first attempt was an epic fail. I had no idea about the science of yeast, and it turned out to be hard as a rock. After a few more tries, I found a recipe that worked for me and then I just started experimenting with different fillings. Overtime I was posting pictures on Facebook and people started asking me to bake for them. It organically (and accidentally) turned into a business.
Kimberly , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I really had no baking background other than directions from a Duncan Hines box. I even have a sign in my kitchen that says “Kitchen, for display only.” I am not a fan of cooking, but I love to bake. I am a creative soul at heart. I’m an actress by trade, but that really shut down during quarantine and I needed a creative outlet. I was one of the many who baked banana bread, but there’s only so much banana bread one can eat! I started following different bakers online to get new ideas and now I bake over 30 different varieties of stuffed challah, both sweet and savory. I even started baking for bar and bar mitzvahs, weddings and other special occasions.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
My business started out as a hobby, during quarantine and evolved into a legitimate business. I now have what I call micro bakery in my home and went as far as getting a food handlers license, a cottage license, and all of the paperwork necessary to make it legitimate. I thought it would be a fun side hustle at first but now it’s actually become a small business that I really enjoy It allows me to continue acting and auditioning as well as be home with my kids. The best part about it is how many wonderful people I have met in the community and how many smiles I’ve been able to bring to peoples faces.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what helped build my reputation with simply the quality of my work. I tried a few different thought was the most delicious and word just spread! Once you have tried my Challah it’s hard to buy store-bought. It’s just not the same! My flavors are so unique and customizable. I follow some incredible bakers where I’ve gotten fabulous ideas as well as come up with some of my own. My family are my number one taste testers!
