We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Korn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was born in NYC and grew up in a home surrounded by the arts. My dad is a musician and my mom is an artist. We eventually moved to the Philly area. When I was 2 years old my parents took me to see the the Pennsylvania Ballet’s Nutcracker. I was mesmerized I told them I was going to be in the ballet one day. I asked to sign up for dance class and by the time I was 11 I was accepted to the Pennsylvania Ballet and danced in the Nutcracker. I fell in love with music listening to my parents play Madonna, Aerosmith, Green Day and Alanis Morisette. I started writing music and knew I was born to perform. When I was 14 I was accepted to the Joffrey Ballet and moved back to NYC. I formed a band when I was 14 and played all around NYC. I went to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and studied music, theatre and dance. I performed in Broadway and Off-Broadway shows while continuing to perform my own original music throughout the city.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a singer/songwriter/producer:dancer. I write music for my own projects, other artists and film/TV. I love to write various styles of music such as pop, rock, r&b, americana and dance. Im also a mom to 4 kids ages 1-9. When I’m not doing music I work as a psychotherapist in private practice where I specialize in working with musicians, dancers, actors and other in the arts struggling with mental health issues.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having people tell me they feel heard after hearing one of my songs. They feel less alone knowing someone understands them. It also is amazing to watch my kids dance and sing along to my music. They see my strong work ethic and how I don’t give up even when told no. The music industry can be challenging but it is my biggest passion. It is my way of expressing myself and knowing that I help others express themself means the world to me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to help people feel like they are not alone by hearing my story through music. I have been moved by so many artists such as Pink, Cyndi Lauper, Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morisette, Pat Benetar, Joan Jett, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and Madonna. Whether it’s lyrics that make me feel certain emotions or a driving beat that makes me want to dance and forget whatever is going on in life for a moment, that is what music is about for me and what I hope I bring to others with my music.
