Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kimberly King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kimberly , thanks for joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Well, my previous job was working for the United States Postal Service. Been working there for 5 years and the money was pretty good but the experience was overall stressful. But while there I learned about the company through the different positions I worked in as well as the company meetings and overall culture. As an Artist, I learned how packages are managed at the post office. And from there I was able to educate myself on how to ship my artwork a bit better in order to ensure a great delivery. Knowing all the information in the post office allowed me to expand my company to consumers overseas. As an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that most companies make a lot of money from spending a lot less on the product but more on the marketing.

Kimberly , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who don’t know me, my name is Kimberly Lori King, but you can call me Kim. On all social media platforms I call myself NerdyDope Artist. The name NerdyDope Artist is also the name of my small business and brand. I’m a Visual Artist and aspiring clothing designer in Atlanta Georgia. I was always very artistic at a young age and the older I became the more serious I began taking my art career.
As a Visual Artist, I love creating art with acrylic paints. Although painting is what I love to do now, I began drawing and sketching portraits and graffiti style art as well. I’m also into thrifting and upcycling which led me into designing and painting purses, wallets, sneakers, slides, jackets, and hats. And I also paint chairs and tables. Turning thrifted items into something beautiful is another passion of mine. Which led to custom work on sneakers and purses for clients. I know most people that come to me for custom work want something original and unique. And I make sure that majority of the art I create when it comes to clothing will definitely make someone stand out in the crowd.
My brand is about being different and loving your unique style and taste. For the people in the world who don’t care what anyone else thinks about what they choose to wear and how they choose to wear it. You already stand out because you’re different, so my line of clothing will make you stand out more because your clothing and accessories are beautifully different as well.
I’m proud of my business and my brand because it represents who I am.
I’ve always been introverted, very intelligent and creative. That alone makes me proud of what I’m doing because all aspects of who I am are being displayed throughout my art and my clothing. I truly appreciate those enjoying the growth of my journey into my many creative passions. And I hope those that gravitate towards my work can be apart of my community as well.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and my mission is to use my God-given talent to make room for me in this world. To no longer depend on a job to live and survive. To no longer struggle at a job when I know I have an awesome talent that is waiting to be shared to the world. In 2019, I told a coworker of mine that I will pursue my art career full time and leave this job within 5 years of my employment. Literally a few weeks before my 5 year employment date,(2022) I put in my two weeks notice and my last day was the day before my birthday which is November 24th. A little over a year later and my business is still growing and prospering. I feel like letting my job go was a huge risk but it opened up many possibilities in my art career. I had more time to create and work on custom work for clients and I was able to do more events and shows. So I’ve reached my initial goal to become a full time Artist but now my mission is to expand my brand to people like me and truly build a connection with the people who resonate with my work.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist would be the ability to actually create everyday. That in itself is a blessing. Being able to mentally and physically create art is the most rewarding aspect. But overall being able to share my work and get different reactions and thoughts from the things I create would be another rewarding aspect as well. That alone is the initial connection I create with anyone viewing my work. I feel good knowing that I’m one out of the many people in this world that create art. And that I can take my beautiful imaginations and create it on whatever canvas I choose so others can see and experience it as well.
