We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Holmes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Oh yes, the fog of fear. We all want to make to make it to the bright side. I had a commitment to end this internal conflict of striving to know what is best for me. I was standing in my bedroom with one of my crystals in my hand staring out the dusty window like I usually did when I felt a spark coming on. “I should dust this window…” I thought… the questions. I realized that I never do what my heart wants to! And then it happened…
The light went through the crystal in such a way that when it hit my hand it shifted my mindset. So many different colors and clarity. When that warm sunlight pushed through stone, I had to believe what I was doing was right. Even just to get halfway there…..I was all for it. That sunlight gave me the momentum to get outside this box I was in mentally. Like a warm golden blanket pouring over my body. The light creeped into my hand, onto my chest, and into my mind. I knelt down and glided my hand through the box of seashells I handpicked the morning prior. They are so beautiful. I wanted to show the world the natural beauty sliding through my fingertips. I wanted people to be able to touch it, feel it, and have this positive grounding energy with them always.
“This means something!” I said. I made the decision to take on this project and call it my own to create the meaningful jewelry I’ve always wanted to do and share. Making it to the bright side was on the other side of the dusty window and it was becoming so clear now I felt. Crystals are the porthole for the sunlight to penetrate within the body and mind. The healing vibes or “energy” from the natural crystals, seashells and stones that I handpicked and collected have these earth connected energies to pass on.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I consider myself a Thalassophile! I grew up on the northern east coast, got my degree in Earth, Ocean and Environmental Studies and was driven by the ocean. I felt I needed to set a new chapter. So I moved and now I live in Charleston, SC. This is my dream home and soon after I started KollectionByKim. I wanted to incorporate the treasures of the earth and ocean into some sort of creative and unique way for myself and others to enjoy.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Mental health awareness is a particular mission driving my creative journey into jewelry making/designing. Transitioning old and bad habits that cause stress into a positive commitment like jewelry making is what I found to be so critical for personal well being. Depression and anxiety can impede anyone’s daily function and so, there can be outlets and good habits rather than just escaping to the old. My goal is to have people aware that there is a way out of the darkness and into the light.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is that I create magic!, which is the smile I get back when someone has on one of my pieces, and that says it all. I can see the energy flow in the right direction, which develops a cool emotional connection. Every piece is 100% unique and no other person will ever have something like this intermingling with your unique energy.
For me, when I need more ideas, I go to the places I love in nature, and when I find the stones and shells, it is much like finding a buried treasure, the excitement and flashes of creativity pop in my mind. That is my ultimate reward and advantage of being a jewelry creative. Kissed by the sunlight and into your hands with gemstones, shells, earth-stones, crystals and geodes. The crystals will attract the sun and moonlight, which can create your shift into positivity and the rush of good vibrations.
