We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Heimbach recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I slowly built up my full time solo career to where now I can fully support my family with it. I worked in-house as a graphic designer and illustrator right away after college for various industries which allowed me to realize what type of companies I wanted work with. It also taught me the process behind alot of things I would have no idea about if I went out on my own right after art school. I learned about how bigger brands collaborated with other brands and how marketing and public relations works. I learned how important reputations are and keeping in contact with your network. There are people I run into today in Los Angeles who I worked with as an intern almost 20 years ago.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding part about being an artist, in particular when I’m creating art live, is the pure joy it brings. When I draw someone as a fashion illustration they are immediately uplifted and see something in themselves they never saw before, pure beauty. We are all so harsh on ourselves not realizing that most of the time others do not recognize the flaws we see in ourselves.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I encourage my friends to get know the local artist in their community to support a thriving ecosystem of creatives.. Look to artist for unique gifts and as a creator to bring your idea to life. I strive to show how attainable art can be for everyone on some scale. I also like to always check out local museums to educate myself more and view how others have collected art.
