We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Greenwell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
Whether it is fate, coincidence, or a little bit of both, I have had many full-circle moments creating My Southern Home. For example, I was in Nashville, TN, running the St. Jude Half Marathon for my 40th birthday.
My sister and a few close friends came to cheer me on and celebrate with me. During the trip, one of my best friends told me I should launch my own television show. At the time, I was on-air and producing Your Kentuckiana Home for a local television station in Lousiville, KY.
I took his advice and launched My Southern Home three months later! One year to the day after launching My Southern Home in Louisville, I expanded to Nashville.
I got an Airbnb for me and the crew to stay in while we were taping the first season.
I was sitting at the kitchen table working on the show, and I saw something out of the corner of my eye. When I looked up, I noticed that the hotel we stayed in for my 40th birthday, where this adventure started, was staring right back at me.
I sat there for a moment, absolutely in awe, and took in the full circle moment. I ran a marathon in Nashville and, one year later, launched a television show here.
Now, seven years later, I call Nashville home. Sometimes, you are running full force toward your destiny and don’t even know it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My goal is to educate and inspire clients to create their dream spaces! I do this by interviewing trusted contractors in a space that they transformed for a homeowner.
The interview airs on my television show, My Southern Home with Kimberly Greenwell! The program can be watched every Saturday at 10 AM on MYTV 30 in Nashville and streamed 24/7 on YouTube.
Hiring the right contractor is so important! I want to inform homeowners what questions to ask when hiring contractors and things to consider when remodeling a space or building from the ground up.
When a homeowner is remodeling their kitchen, they are not thinking about layering the lighting or the space’s functionality. They are thinking about the color of the cabinets, the flooring, and the countertops.
I want homeowners to step back, sit in their space, and consider how it can serve them better. For example, when I’m cooking, it would be great to have spices right at my fingertips. I hate bending down to get my food processor or blender out; wouldn’t having an appliance garage to store it would be great?
That is my goal, my why, and I love helping homeowners. No matter how small or large your home is, it should be filled with things you love and bring you joy.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Taping the leap of faith to start My Southern Home took a lot of resilience! When I started the show, there were people who were really happy for me and knew it would be successful, but there were also a lot of people who didn’t mind telling me it was going to be an epic failure.
Being resilient is all about believing in yourself and ignoring the voices in your head and the naysayers who want to see you fail. Although I have worked in and around television my entire adult career, I have never produced my television show by myself.
I knew I could do it because, in so many ways, I was already doing it with Your Kentuckiana Home.
After the first season, I changed the way I did things, always trying to be better and learn from my mistakes. It got to the point where what I was doing was so big that I no longer had control of the show.
I didn’t have control of my life, and the show owned me! So, I took another leap of faith and decided to go down to one market. People would say you don’t want to go backward; this is a bad decision.
On the flip side, my true friends just wanted me to be happy. My career has been my everything all my life, and I don’t regret that. I have had an amazing life and unbelievable experiences.
Now, I’m at a point where I want more. I want more time with friends, to be still in one place, and to have one show and put my all into it.
I shut down the Louisville market, moved to Nashville full-time, and got my real estate license. I am still transitioning and figuring out where this will lead me, but I already know it was the best decision for me and my life.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
My biggest lesson is to always listen to your heart and not let people control your destiny! There were so many times that I let people talk me out of dreams or changes I wanted to make in my company.
If your heart is telling you something or you want to do something different, listen to it. Depending on what is going on in your life, you might have to take baby steps to get there, but there is always a way.
