We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Fox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Honestly I tried so many different hobbies and it took about 10yrs to find what I loved to do, working with epoxy resin. I had the box for months before I actually had the courage to open it. this was during June of 2020, when most people were scared and depressed, it has helped my mental health so much, just by having that outlet. I watched tons of YouTube videos, joined Facebook groups for people interested in resin, researched safe practices and different techniques. Once I actually started I was hooked. The artistic freedom you get when working with resin is truly amazing. I started small with keychains and simple things, and within 6 months I was making tables and home decor items. I do live craft shows so I can meet people, there is no better feeling than meeting someone who loves your art, and being able to shake that person’s hand and thank them for their support. The most important skill with resin is imagination, your art will only go as far as your imagination will allow it, don’t be afraid to tap into your inner child and go nuts! The biggest obstacle was finding and using the proper PPE required to work with resin. Many people do not use masks with filters, and the fumes when curing can be very harmful, especially if it’s done inside, safety is the #1 obstacle most artists face, proper PPE can be very expensive, would I would like to see in the near future is artists having the ability to aquire safe protective gear without spending $500.

Kimberly , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a stay at home mom to 3 small kids, I have some health issues that affect my mental health. During the pandemic I was in a really bad place depression wise, so I started looking for hobbies I hadn’t tried yet, and when I started working with resin it helped me so much, it gave me the ability to shut off the flood of thoughts and just be present in the moment. It’s helped me be a better mom, better wife and person in general, I have more patience and am just happier than I was before. My children are happier because their mom is happier. What I am most proud of is the fact that I started working small with keychains, and within 6 months I was making tables and home decor items, I really enjoy making people laugh so I also started making adult gag humor gifts, and taking custom request orders, I love being challenged, I encourage it, I’m willing to try anything at least once, how else do new techniques get discovered? Honestly I love my customers, just the fact that they like my art makes me blush and smile, I’ve had horrible days, then I get a review from a happy customer and it can turn my whole day around.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
What society can do best to support artists is shop small. There are so many large business that actually steal from small artists, like Amazon and Wish. Resin molds for example, they find cool ones in small shops in places like Etsy, then turn around and mass produce them, and most small business do not have the funds or mean to go after big companies like them for intellectual property infringement. They are literally stealing from small businesses then mass producing them and selling it for a lower price which hurts the actual creator of that item or image.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Most resin companies will actually have groups you can join to learn more about your specific brand, safe practices, techniques, some even have ambassador programs. I did not know that until 6 months after I started.
