We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Epps recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kimberly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
Being able to serve is always something I have made a priority to do, and teach my kids as well. I heard a quote years ago that said” Giving back, is the taxes you pay to be human.” When I first moved back to Atlanta in 2013, I did not have a place to stay. At one point, I slept in my car until a friend of mine told me I could sleep at his home. He had just moved and had no furniture so I made a pallet on the floor.
One thing that I will never do, is forget where I started from. At some point in our lives, we all have been or could be close to needing a place just to lay our heads with the help of another person. For that reason, I am an avid volunteer at the Atlanta Women’s shelter. I have also created an 8 hour course that will train and certify women and men from the ages of 16-45 in the career of Residential Leasing and management. The course is cost friendly, and you are able to get right to work in the field of Real Estate. I am taking this year, to refocus my vision for my company and really sow into the lives of others at the same time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My company is called The Epps & Aubrey Group. I am based out of Atlanta Ga, and maintain the private housing needs for celebrities and film crew when they come to Atlanta to film. I also manage investor portfolios ranging from commercial to residential homes. One of the things I am excited about is the fact that I get to share my journey into real estate with many others who are interested through an in-person 8 hour course. Currently, I am filming a docuseries based show focusing on my life and career called Kim So Candidly. With this show, I anticipate it will widen my platform and open up more doors for me to help and mentor people in the real estate field.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I am asked that question my answer is always the same, ‘ scared money don’t make money.’ Of course you want to use wisdom in your spending with building a brand, however; once the foundation of a budget is laid out, you have to put action behind it. I pretty much kept my 9-5 back when I was managing an apartment complex and worked on my business when I had time. I allocated a certain amount a month to move forward with paying for my business license, registering my LLC and purchasing my domain name.
Once I launched my company, I made all that money back within 1 month.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
I have never sold a business, but I did ‘Gift” some of my clients to another aspiring property manager. I am at a transitional place in my career at the moment, and ready to scale down in some areas, so that I can scale up in others. I had to trim the fat so to speak, and passing along a part of my company was the best thing for me to do. My favorite part in doing so, is that I also get to mentor the new property manager as she takes on this new branch of Real Estate.
