We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Dixon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
Financial literacy is a critical missing component of our educational system. Basic understanding of credit, debt, taxes, earning pathways that include degrees and/ or a trade could go a long way towards graduating students into self sufficient and productive citizens.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am former collegiate athlete college (shooting guard for the Texas Southern Lady Tigers). I have a bachelors in business with concentration in marketing and a Masters in human behavior. Out of college I secured my dream job in pharmaceutical sales but transitioned to real estate in 2006 and never looked back. I pride myself in solving complex issues for my clients, connecting and creating fruitful business ventures and enhancing the landscape of the 4th largest city in the United States through residential real estate development and sales. There are a handful of minorities and women participating in the creation of real estate- I most proud of (1) being a pathway to SO MANY 1st time homeowners. Secondly when I’m able to share my knowledge and expertise with others who are committed to creating quality affordable home ownership -In this space -my purpose seems fulfilled.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The One thing every successful entrepreneur knows is that being a business owner is all about the pivot! In 2007 -one year after I entered the real este industry -the US experience a market crash unlike any other. In the pivot you have to be aware of yourself and your surroundings. I knew the downturn wouldn’t be forever but made sure to connect with a builder (a bigger entity) who could weather the storm. In that pivot I learned a lot about what I would being doing a decade later-and leaned on that experience when entering the world of residential consulting and development. In sales we say ABC, ALWAYS BE SELLING- My philosophy is ABL, always be learning. Experiences are never a loss-and always a lesson.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
For several years I helped investors acquire land, understand feasibility and execute on delivered developments. In 2020 my husband and I purchased a track of land, I diligently worked to complete the entitlements, Covid hit and a snowball of roadblocks for keep me in permitting for almost 2 years. I’ve been able to clear those hurdles and sell the that tract and entitlements for almost $1 million more than the purchased price. I had a lot of sleepless nights -tons of prayer, meditation and self care -But neverI NEVER thought giving up was an option. The way you do one thing is the way you do everything- when you’re going through hell -don’t stop- keep going! Persistence pays.
