We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kimberly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents were both instrumental in my journey to becoming a voice artist. They lead me in a direction None us knew would lead to my career and passion of voice artist. My mother was very firm in her stance on how I was to use the english language, that’s putting it mildy – she was the language police in our home, she was serious about the use of verbs, nouns and proper conjugation.
We moved from Chicago to Texas when I was 10 years old and she absolutely forbid my to speak with the Texas drawl, are lazy talk as she called it. there you be no Y’all used in her presence only (you all). She gave me an appreciation for language and enunciation.
My father gave me the gift of enjoying reading and visualizing the characters, unknown to him or I. You see it was his task to make me read when mother was at work so he would tell me to read a chapter and I’d lie on the floor of my bedroom daydreaming until he thought enough tie had passed for the one chapter, he’d ask if I was done reading I’d say yes then be released to play. After some time he began to ask me to tell him about the story I’d just read….”Ahhh great so now he’s quizing me geesh” I had no answer he’s caught on to my lie’s and now I had to actually read, but then I began to enjoy it and actually be friends with the characters.
Those thing set in motion my love of words and speaking.
Kimberly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My first memory of doing my craft of Voice artistry but not knowing it was sometime in the early 2000’s while working for a large corporation I recorded an outgoing message for my department which the district manager heard and so very impressed with my voice, tone ect..
I had no idea at the time I was flexing my God given gift!
Fast forward to 2018 my nephew heard some of the voice recordings I’d done for various acquaintances and asked if I was promoting myself on Fiverr? I had been oblivious to the fact I was already working in the voice industry. From there I began to promote myself, get professional coaching and building my Voice Over business.
People usually have no idea what being a Voice Artist/Talent is the simple answer is I add character to written content, be it a product commercial, digital marketing, adding voice to real estate 360 walk-thru’s, radio commercials, voicing training videos and e-learning courses to podcast and so much more.
I created a branch of business -Voice Enhanced Digital Marketing – that focuses solely on helping businesses better understand and improve they’re brand recognition thru Brand Storytelling ie.. Voice Marketing.
The story a business tell’s their audience helps to humanize the company, connect potential clients with they’re brand, and develop a deeper relationship with your products and services.
I help businesses to creates new cost effective marketing avenues, teach them how use platforms they already have as digital marketing tools.
I am very proud that people know me as a positive voice and as someone who is genuine.
My brand is all about Speaking Life – positivity I know it sounds cliche but I am a huge advocate for people learning to not only use their voices but to use them to uplift others.
Speaking is a major part of our society and words can have lot’s of power so it’s my goal to continue to be an example of light and strength.
As a voice talent I use my voice to create positive uplifting projects that communicate, educate, inspire, and entertain.
Voice isn’t just a thing!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have always been a very physically active person, at 19 I joined the U.S. Navy and learned that my physical strength was respected, so I made it a point to prove my physical strength every chance I got. I began to value my strength as my main attribute and connected my self worth to it.
I went back to college got a degree in Kinesiology and began a personal training / Consulting business after a couple years I suffered from bulging discs in my neck and entire spine.
I was devastated, I lost my identity and self-worth and my business.
It literally took years, other people seeing in me what I couldn’t see in myself and some counseling to open my eyes and realize my other strengths and talents.
I had always had a passion for words and speaking but never gave myself credit for my talent and creativity until I was forced to pivot, the power of reinvention is amazing.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my opinion as a society we are transitioning into a normalization of AI -artificial intelligence and although it’s use could be beneficial in some aspects I believe the over use of it is robbing creatives, all artistic mediums are being devalued because AI can create faster or easier in some instances but it’s not better.
To continue a thriving creative eco system we have to insist on not only spending our dollars with actual people who have trained and cultivated there talents but advocating for them out loud.
Without creatives where would our world be today, societies most precious treasures and works of art were created by people.
