We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Cushing recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
I officially became a business over two years ago. Shortly after filing with the state, I received a yellow post card in the mail. It was from the William Factory. I had no idea what that was, but it stated that they supported businesses. I decided to be brave and give them a call. I ended up speaking with the director, Tim Strege, who generously took time to learn about my business.
Tim genuinely cared about my aspirations and provided words of encouragement that has kept me moving forward, especially when self-doubt tries to sneak in.
He had nothing to gain by helping me, but his words instilled a confidence in me that has propelled me along my entrepreneurial journey. He made me believe I could actually do this! I could be successful at business!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After 20+ years of educating, including delivering lively stories to my children as well as others, and volunteering for several organizations….I had the opportunity to do some public service announcements on our city’s radio station and LOVED IT!
While listening to an audiobook, my AHA moment hit…I had been in training for VOICEOVERS all those years!
My experience as an educator, parent, special needs caregiver, and volunteer has honed my ability to connect with diverse audiences and deliver effective messaging.
I love collaborating with clients and helping them find the ‘right voice’ for their project.
I do commercials, narrations, animations, video games, eLearning, and more.
My tag line is: Sunny with a Chance of Sass! So there you go, I’m almost always smiling, but I can throw in some sass when I need to.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I could wrap my head around social media!
Of course I knew about it, but it seems to be this animal with analytics that are always changing and if you don’t learn how to play the game you are coming in last place.
It’s hard enough to run a business, but the social media is like a business all in itself. The resource I wish I knew about would be someone that holds my hand and walks me through getting set up and started with all of it. Then I could be on my way. Despite my attempts to at figuring out, I’m still struggling with it.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Okay, I’m a non-creative, creative…..I love math. I love the nerdy things in life. And I had never, ever considered myself creative! My husband reminds me of all the ‘creative’ things I have done over the years….I would sing and act out things with my kids while homeschooling them, read to them in my British voice, I was a children’s worship director, I helped direct a puppet theater, I was the one in the group acting silly to make people laugh, I would make up random hand motions to a narrator on a tour, just to name a few…and I can remember doing these sorts of things back in junior high and high school. I had always chocked it up to my fun personality.
So my journey has been to realize that I’m not one or the other, creative or non-creative…I can be, and am, both. In fact, being mathematical has helped me stay focused and on task. I’ve even allowed my creative side to slip over to my mathematical side. While tutoring someone in advanced algebra, my left brain wanted to protest the way it was being taught in the student’s school. Instead, I did a bit of research and accepted that maybe other people needed that way of learning and doing math. And if it helps them to learn it, I needed to know it to help them, as well.
